I can understand this even if they weren't "something else entirely." In Sci-Fi especially, a lot of female characters aren't really well rounded or developed. Writers simply stick them into films and shows for fan-service.

Oh man, sorry, deleted my comment. /idiot

(For the curious, it was:

This.

A lot of my favorite characters belong to certain character types that a lot of female characters don't get (like "nerdy" or "badass old person" - there are exceptions, but most of them are dudes). I don't like the boring heroic type or Love Interest With Little-to-no-Development
)

People throw the word misogynist around so much, it barely has any meaning any more. Ignore them.

[identity profile] katplayer.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, I'm female and I don't particularly appreciate any female characters in any fandom I've ever been in. I don't hate them really, but I never recall especially liking any. What does that make me?

[identity profile] spider-rogue.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
In the wrong fandoms, obviously. :P

(No disrespect meant. I've just almost never been in a fandom where I didn't love at least one female character.)

[identity profile] katplayer.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
You could say that. 2/3 of my current fandoms are a person and a band respectively, the band being completely male and the person male as well. Ace Attorney's the only fandom I'm in with any female characters.

Then again, it's not very surprising in the first place. I've always been one of the boys, myself. :3

[identity profile] spider-rogue.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, I see. Nothing wrong with that, of course, I just personally can't imagine being in a fandom where I couldn't fangirl at least one lady. then again I have some not-so-latent lesbian tendencies so I may not be the best example XD

[identity profile] sarolynne.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, OP, but to me it seems like you're just borrowing trouble based on what you're afraid people are like rather than actually giving them the chance to represent themselves.

Try to relax, like the characters you like, and see if anyone actually ever even cares? Unless you're in the habit of saying things like "I never like female characters," or something like that, I strongly suspect they won't.

[identity profile] caelith.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Like who you want to like. Life's too short to let people dictate to you and it's certainly too short to waste on guilt trips.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-20 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude who cares. Most of my favourite characters are male too. If people are calling you a misogynist because of that then they probably don't know what misogyny means :|

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh. I guess I'm pretty much the same. I mean, in most of my fandoms, I can name female characters that I like (most of the main players in DC are fantastic, all the women from Firefly, the Buffy crew), but at the end of the day if I were to pick my favorites, they'd probably all be guys.

Whatevs. I identify more with guys anyway.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-21 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto on the just don't call attention to the lack of females in your favorites. Even then, whatever, don't worry about people calling misogyny, unless they bring up a specific point like slut-shaming or what have you. It is an overused call, I think it somewhat replaced accusing all people who hate slash and yaoi of being homophobic. People like to justify disliking things that others like by bringing isms into messes where they don't always fit.

It is harder to find well rounded, flawed, awesome female characters. Almost to the point where you get so used to the female characters being uninteresting, that you gloss over the gems that do come along. I used to feel starved for awesome female characters, so I latch onto leads and have found loads of great ones, but if you don't feel the want to go on a similar search, there's no reason to bother.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2010-09-21 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
My primary fandom only has two recurring female characters, one of whom is a damsel in distress half the time. Fortunately, the other one is awesome (or she was until the writers got told to dumb everyone down), but it does mean that I generally don't get to show ass-kicking sisterhood. Sometimes the canon just isn't very female-friendly. It's a problem, but it doesn't mean we're Doing It Wrong for loving the source material anyway.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-21 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
I see it like this: As long as you don't hate the female characters JUST because they're female, you're not misogynist, you just happen to like the other characters more and that's perfectly ok.

[identity profile] hologrphcbuddha.livejournal.com 2010-09-21 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think not liking female characters is necessarily indicative that you're sexist, OP (I didn't want to use the word misogynist b/c it means women hating, it doesn't sound like you hate female characters so much as they just aren't your favorites). I do, however, think it might be indicative of a larger problem within the male-dominated media--male characters are frequently better developed, more dynamic, and given more screen time than female characters, so it's not surprising if many of your favorites are guys. Of course, this doesn't justify a lack of female characters on TV either ("It's not the writers' faults people aren't as interested in female characters!"--yes, I have really had that one lobbed at me--by women, no less--when I've complained about the lack of female characters in my shows). What it does mean is that we need more female characters in a greater variety of roles than the usual uninspiring roles that tend to be defined by their relationships to the men.

THIS!

I have the same problem as anon and though I don't worry about people thinking I'm misogynistic, it annoys me. It's very frustrating when you really want to find some well-developed, interesting female characters to love and they're so hard to find. Of course, it makes me appreciate and love the female characters I do love all the more, but that it's such a reason to celebrate is depressing in itself.

[identity profile] hologrphcbuddha.livejournal.com 2010-09-21 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
I totally identify, dude. I think my favorites are pretty evenly divided amongst male and female characters, but I am fortunate enough to be in fandoms for shows that feature at least one well-portrayed female character. Unfortunately, one of said shows was recently cancelled while another got the bright idea to fire one of its female leads, so I'm being quite bitter rn. You know there's a problem on TV when the most visible female protagonist is Meredith Freakin' Grey (this is not my quote; it came from a great article I unforch lost the link to, but it's so apropos).

I'm sorry to hear about the female lead! That must be so frustrating for the fans!

You're lucky that your fandoms have well-portrayed characters - or is this one of your criteria for choosing your fandoms? When I mentally run through the fandoms I've been interested in these last few years, it seems to me like there have been more with interesting female characters than before. I don't know if it's a subconscious preference or coincidence, though.

What I find even more disappointing than female characters being mere eye candy or the hero's conquest, though, is when well-developed female characters are reduced to this. I feel cheated by the writers then. It sometimes makes me wish a ship won't become canon/glad they didn't become canon, even though I'm a shipper myself.

Misogyny is different than sexism. Someone can be sexist without being a misogynist.

That said . . .

It's easy for me to see how someone could think you're sexist if none of your favorite characters are female, but I probably wouldn't jump to that conclusion unless I saw you hardcore bashing female characters for no particular reason on a somewhat regular basis.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-22 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to worry about the same thing, OP. And then I found an author who wrote good, believable, round female characters and didn't feel to give all the good story lines to the men. (In case you're wondering, that's Kelley Armstrong.) So- it's not you who's misogynist. It's our entertainment industry as a whole. You're not playing the odds with this one, so dig deep, anon.
