And if anyone needs a fannish reason to love them, they were partially responsible for the music of the Lord of the Rings musical. I don't believe it's as awesome as their own albums, though, especially Miero.

I too wasn't a huge fan of the LotR musical soundtrack - it just didn't have the same energy and flavour of their own albums. It's been a long time since I listened to it, actually, so I should give it another shot. Miero is indeed a great album. I'm particularly fond of Vihma, though, as well as a lot of their older albums - Aitara, Oi Dai, and Seleniko are also sweet.

Oh, I know one song by these guys (Katariina) and it's my favorite song in the world! But... when I looked up other music by them, it didn't seem to be much like that. Tell me, f!s-goers, is that song different from the rest of theirs, or what other songs do they have that are similar to that one?

I was listening to Liigua by them right when I was reading it. I got so happy!
I took as a sign to respond.
I understand your pain. I always feel a bit weird haveing them pop up on my speakers when I have friends over because:
A. I'm in college and I look like the type of girl that would be listening to Lady Gaga or something, not world folk music.
B. I'm American with no Finnish ancestry or ties. (I find the language absolutely beautiful even though I have no idea what they are saying)

But I would love everything if they got some fame here. I think they have amazing vocals and unique sound which always prompts me to dance.

Värttinä is certainly the most successful Finnish folk band I know. I don't listen to them much, even though I'm Finnish and I have the means to do so... I think it's because (usually, not always) their songs are very hard to follow on the first try, even if you know the language. Imagine Shakespeare, only mixed with an unusual dialect, and then add some speed lol

Anyways, I prefer Finnish rock/metal, but Värttinä is pretty darn good for a folk music band.

Did you know that two of the Värttinä members (Virtanen & Aho) formed a folk duo Kuunkuiskaajat? They represented Finland in the Eurovision song contest. (...Though I have to admit that the song they sang there was just... annoying.)
