as someone who *has* watched the show, i can still kind of relate to OP.

the whole thing made me really uncomfortable. maybe it's just cuz it hit a bit too close to home - i know there's been times when i acted exactly like she did after the fight with katara / zuko... well, minus the fire stuff, obviously - but... it somehow felt like... i don't know, as if she was being punished by going crazy? it's like, she'd always been the baddy and she'd always been in control. but then we figure out that the truth is, no one loves her, she can't handle the thing she had wanted, she doesn't have *anything*. and now she's just a pitiable crazy bitch who can't do anything but scream uncontrollably. how saaaad. watching the finale, the last thing i took away from the show was "there's no redemption for the crazies, they're evil" and that was... kind of a bummer.

still, of course, i'm not saying that was the way we're *supposed* to read the character - in fact, i think the interpretations offered by the other commenters before me make a lot of sense! i'm just describing what it felt like to me when i watched the finale.

Except...Azula going to a mental institution gives her plenty of time and opportunity to be redeemed.

Azula going to a mental institution gives her plenty of time and opportunity to be redeemed

She didn't go into a mental institution /: Did she? I thought she was just imprisoned...

(Anonymous) 2010-09-21 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
*shrug* I thought there was a thing on the Nick website that said she went to a mental institution, but it's been a while, so I could be wrong.

[identity profile] skiota.livejournal.com 2010-09-21 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, it's just kind of fannon. The way Katara and Zuko looked at her with pity at the end makes everyone think what he might have done to help her.

We'll find out with 'Legend of Korra' when it comes out. I think I read that her children were the baddies but I could be mistaken.

Azula having grandchildren is a rumor.

[identity profile] snowdevil-crow.livejournal.com 2010-09-22 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the creators said she was put in an asylum?

[identity profile] caterfree10.livejournal.com 2010-09-22 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
They did on the Nick website after the finale aired.

[identity profile] caterfree10.livejournal.com 2010-09-22 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
*BZZT* Wrong answer. It actually IS Word of God true that Azula was institutionalized and said info was on the Nickelodeon website.

[identity profile] caterfree10.livejournal.com 2010-09-22 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yes she did. Word of God on the Nick website says she was sent to an asylum.

Becoming a sympathetic character doesn't automatically open the door to redemption. Her breakdown didn't come about because she "saw the light" like Zuko did. Do we have any reason to believe, based on what we were shown, that Azula would come to regret her actions (of which consist many attempts at murder) and change her world view? She may "heal" in the sense that she'd regain her wits. But is she even capable of "changing for the better" when she was already proven to be sadistic and malicious as a small child? That strongly hints she's always been the way she is. She'd pretty much have to undergo a personality overhaul...

"there's no redemption for the crazies, they're evil"

I know, that's what I worry about too when I think about the depiction and narration of mental health in the media. I feel like people who have mental health issues, troubled behaviour, and clear signs that there are pretty much deeper problems going on, just get shoved in a corner and labeled "crazy bitch" and then ignored when they clearly need help.

It makes me uncomfortable to think that it's a cosmic joke that the people most in need of help are the least likely to get it (or that anyone might have even done that to me).

As I said, I have not seen the show, but I do know that is the last episode, so while I know she was institutionalized (at least according to Avatar Wiki), I do wish there were more on her story and what happened to her after that. I do plan on eventually watching the series and I wish that wasn't the final word on her.

If it makes you feel any better, basically all of the show's fans wish we saw more about what happened to her, as well. I don't think it was ever treated as a cosmic joke. The last scenes with her were absolutely gutwrenching, and did underscore how badly she needed help.

But she wasn't "a crazy." She was evil and very in control, and when she lost the battle she couldn't handle it and basically freaked out. I'm more uncomfortable when people describe this as "mental illness" or talk about the character as if she's representing a disorder.

Sometimes life and stress drive people to extremes of emotion, and if someone bases their whole identity on something and they lose it it can bring on a crisis. I don't think she was being punished so much as this was the logical outcome of the way she pushed herself and what she valued. She probably felt betrayed by life. Even if she remained evil or broken forever I don't think it says anything about mental illness any more than it says that martial arts is connected to evil.

That's really interesting, that her mental illness came about as a result of placing too many demands on herself, rather than evil or her father's influence, I hadn't thought of that. I wonder if pushing yourself through much stress will inevitably result in a breakdown. I'm also curious as to whether her relationships with the people around her were as a result of any of these, pushing herself/just "being plain evil"/choosing her father over her mother, or whether it was just an unfortunate side effect?

Anyway, I guess I can't answer these questions until I marathon the show now, which I'm about to, so I guess I'll follow up with what I think later :-) I might have a completely different opinion by the time I'm finished.

Totally the same feelings I got when I watched it :(

*nod nod* After my initial high of "OMG LOVE" marathoning the show, this is the bit that I'm stuck on and it's definitely kind of a bummer. :(
