If you'd seen the show, you'd know how fucking badass of a villain she is. She is a villain because she is evil; she is sympathetic because she lost her mind.

:/

If you had watched the show, and seen what she'd done in it prior to her breakdown, I think you'd understand why she's the bad guy in the series.

She is not the bad guy for having a mental/emotional breakdown. She's the bad guy because she was her evil father's favorite and wanted everyone to submit to her whims the way people did to his. Not to mention the fact that she tried many times to kill her own brother.

[identity profile] zhyvae.livejournal.com 2010-09-21 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, don't worry, she tried to kill her brother and tons of other people. I'm sure you were never that far gone.

[identity profile] possessedrabbit.livejournal.com 2010-09-21 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
How can you say you both broke down for the same reasons if you've never watched the show?

[identity profile] ryuutchi.livejournal.com 2010-09-21 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you try to take over the world?

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2010-09-21 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
You, uh, really need to do a little more research on Azula there. She was a bit worse than just 'the bad guy'.

[identity profile] avocado-love.livejournal.com 2010-09-21 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
... You really need to watch the show, or at least wiki this character before you spend time angsting about if you're the same as her. She's the bad guy for good reasons. None of them being that she lost her mind. In fact, she was scariest when she was in complete control.

... I would say that if you are like Azula you are probably a bad person, but that's because she's also abusive, sadistic in the not-good way, and generally a complete monster by her own admittance.

If anon is worrying about it, they are not like her.

[identity profile] une-pomme-folle.livejournal.com 2010-09-21 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Can you shoot blue flames out of your hands? Do you routinely try to kill your older brother and his new BFFs? Is your ultimate goal to take over the Earth Kingdom and destroy the Avatar? No? Then you are nothing like her.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-21 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel genuinely sorry for Azula, but she did a lot of genuinely horrible things BEFORE she lost her mind.

That said, I do think a bit of her story raises the question of where being dysfunctional and being "evil" sort of part ways, and that's an uncomfortable issue. Some people with mental and emotional issues only hurt themselves or have other issues functioning, but some people with those issues do hurt others partly because of them. Azula was deliberately raised to be the way she was and didn't have people pulling her in the other direction in quite the way that Zuko did. That's why although I think her actions were terrible, I can't quite hate her and like to think she might have gotten better eventually.

But it is more that her obvious mental/emotional issues caused some to see her as not such a bad guy then the other way around, if you get my drift.

[identity profile] tonko-ni.livejournal.com 2010-09-21 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Her family didn't desert her--she had a vendetta against her big brother since they were under ten years old. She terrorized her friends to keep them with her and threatened their families to get them to join her cause. She thought hurting animals was funny. She was entirely thrilled to watch her father burn her brother's face during a duel instigated because her brother stood up to their father in defense of troops being used as canon fodder.

I don't think you're like that.

[identity profile] sarolynne.livejournal.com 2010-09-21 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people find Azula sympathetic. Some don't. In the end, though, I really don't think you need to stress over that. You are a real person, and have a real life, complex psychology. You have real person concerns and motivations, and while I suppose there are still princesses in the world, I doubt you are one, or struggling with stylized fantasy world culture, magic, expectations or politics. Azula's mental state and breakdown are all stylized and fictionalized for the purpose of storytelling, as is her driving away those close to her.

She in no way reflects on you. No matter who you are, or what you did, or what the people around you did, you are not a villain.

as someone who *has* watched the show, i can still kind of relate to OP.

the whole thing made me really uncomfortable. maybe it's just cuz it hit a bit too close to home - i know there's been times when i acted exactly like she did after the fight with katara / zuko... well, minus the fire stuff, obviously - but... it somehow felt like... i don't know, as if she was being punished by going crazy? it's like, she'd always been the baddy and she'd always been in control. but then we figure out that the truth is, no one loves her, she can't handle the thing she had wanted, she doesn't have *anything*. and now she's just a pitiable crazy bitch who can't do anything but scream uncontrollably. how saaaad. watching the finale, the last thing i took away from the show was "there's no redemption for the crazies, they're evil" and that was... kind of a bummer.

still, of course, i'm not saying that was the way we're *supposed* to read the character - in fact, i think the interpretations offered by the other commenters before me make a lot of sense! i'm just describing what it felt like to me when i watched the finale.

if you watch the show, OP, I think you will find you probably are not like her.

I got really emotional at that part and I have to say, that part in the entire series is my favorite scene.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-21 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry. I've been involuntarily admitted to a mental institution myself and I actually watch the show (I hated her throughout, actually), and I still feel sad during that scene.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-21 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you a sociopathic pyromaniac who thinks torture is a fun way to pass the time and wants to conquer and burn the entire world? Did your friends abandon you because you were about to kill one of them simply because she helped to save your brother's life?

If your answer to any of those is yes, then you're kind of like Azula. If your answer is no, no, you're not like Azula, and you're probably not that bad.

[identity profile] snowdevil-crow.livejournal.com 2010-09-22 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if you still wanted to know more about Azula... she's really smart, powerful, ruthless, arrogant, and rather cruel, which are reasons enough for a lot of people to love her, but especially in the third season she's shown to be a little more than that. I've noticed that a lot of fandom seems to hate the character depth she's given in season three, because they prefer to view her as irredeemably evil, completely sociopathic monster (because, okay, she is pretty fucking badass) - but IDK, I think they tend to forget that she's only fourteen years old, and has spent the past three years before the start of the show with absolutely no positive influences around her.

Her father doesn't really care about her at all - he favours her, but only because she's talented. When she screws up, he abandons her and leaves her with a title he's about to make obsolete anyway. She doesn't really know how to interact with normal people, she doesn't know how to have friends on an equal level or trust anyone, and she's obsessed with doing everything perfectly. She is a villain, but she's also fairly sympathetic, and she's hardly irredeemable - the creators say she does have a chance of redeeming herself after the finale.

Anyway, aside from that, I second what [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] said.

Azula was an incredible, incredible villain - but her mental issues had nothing to do with her evil nature. You could go so far as to say her evil nature corrupted her, not the other way around; that is to say, "she was evil and went crazy" instead of "she was crazy and therefore evil."

Azula was at her absolute best when she was totally in control of the situation, which is why her meltdown came as a bit of a shock, even with the subtle hints leading up to the finale - it wasn't that her mind was unhinged, it was that her world was built on a few certainties; she was Daddy's favorite, she was stronger than her brother, she was the best firebender, and she could control people with fear. When those certainties were no longer certain, her world fell apart. And it was done so quickly, she never had a chance to recover before Zuko and Katara came to challenge her directly. It's really an amazingly effective breakdown that came out of left field, but makes so much sense in retrospect.

Yes, Azula was abandoned by pretty much everyone in the end.

She was also an utter sociopath. Don't hold me to this, but IIRC, she never really showed signs of actual remorse. She felt lonely and abandoned, yes, but it may have been that she did so in a very self-centered way.

There are any number of reasons why what happened to you could've happened. The same outcome can be caused by a dozen different things. Azula is one fictional case, and RL is generally much more complicated than that.

So please don't blame it on yourself, and good luck with your further recovery!

Hm, I agree that it's unlikely you're as 'evil' as her since you probably didn't try to take over the world or literally kill your family.

But I have had family that were so disturbingly hurtful and hateful that everyone abandoned them. Family members who were so out of control with their manipulative schemes and the way they ruined other peoples' lives to the point of causing nervous attacks.

So maybe you aren't crazy or a sociopath, but ask yourself, did I hurt anyone? Why did they leave me? It's easy to say you don't fit into a label, but the majority speaks: you did something. Hope you figure it out and are able to reach out to the people who left you. And I hope you guys patch it up.

Azula's a toughie. People left her due to conflicting views, and in the case of her father, he never really cared for her as much as she envisioned (he's pretty much an ass). Her mother was exiled, her brother is working against her (for the greater good, really), and her friends don't agree with her actions. In the case of the show, we saw that she pushed away her friends. She incarcerated her two friends for acting against her, she tried to kill her brother, and she pretty much manipulated everyone and anyone to reach her goal.

She's a villain, but a sympathetic villain. We see her illusion of her mother and realize just how much she really did love her mom. We see her utterly distressed by her father. We see her have this incredibly huge break down at the end, and it's not a triumphant moment at all. It's heartbreaking. You want her to feel better, get better, be able to live without needing someone's approval and needing to control others.

You need to watch the show to get just how she ended up the way she was at the end. You can't identify yourself to a character that you only know the end results of. Situations differ from person to person.

As someone whose friend was committed against her own will (ofc I was against it - I know what it's like inside, and those places rarely help anyone who doesn't want to be there), no, I don't think you're the same as Azula.
Insanity (temporary or not) does not equal 'bad', it just often means your psyche is overloaded, or something like that.
You've got nothing to feel bad about. People's reactions stem from their own failure to understand different conditions.

Azula was a bad person, not bad or undesirable because she lost her mind in the end, but bad because of her bad actions.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2010-09-22 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure you weren't trying to kill your brother and didn't rejoice when your mother was disappeared. Azula's family didn't so much desert her as they ran for their freaking lives.
