I like this secret. :D

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay the vitiligo, I can see that people who haven't encountered it might not understand it. But his making great music doesn't have anything to do in either direction with whether he was actually guilty of those charges. (Unless of course you think that his years as a child star permanently messed up his boundaries, and that's why things may have happened.)

I mean, Phil Spector is a fucking genius, possibly the single best producer in the history of rock and roll. His contribution to popular music is so immense that it would take hours to fully describe it. And he's in jail for homicide. So yeah, you can be a great artist and do some fucked up shit. Happens all the time.

[identity profile] wordfuzion.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
If you really read up on both molestation cases, there just wasn't enough evidence to clearly say "this man is a Pedophile!" And by paying off the first boy, well, he slit his own throat with that move, to be perfectly honest. Once you start putting money out, alot of "victims" start coming out of the woodwork. Look at the Priest Abuse scandal in the Catholic Church. Yes, there are legitimate victims, but they started coming out in huge numbers AFTER the Vatican began pay offs.

Yeah, there's just so much out there, if you're willing to look into it (which unfortunately most people are not) that screams "extortion!", I just can't believe how the media ran with it. The Charles Thomson article, One of the Most Shameful Episodes in Journalistic History, covers it pretty well, but that doesn't get into the 1993 thing. It sucks that he paid them off, it really does. I know he was pressured into it by his insurers, and he was basically having one of the worst periods of his life at the time, but still. Tom Mesereau was right; he could've won that case had it gone to trial, and it should have. Especially considering that Evan Chandler's actions speak louder than anything else (drugging his son, then later trying to kill him, etc). But the 2005 trial? God, what a joke, from beginning to end. It pisses me off.

Uh. Unlike the Catholic Church, Michael Jackson was not an institution that gave itself personal access to literal millions of children and then brushed known, admitted child abuse under the rug.

I'm not sure why you're making that comparison but I don't think it's a valid one, especially given that evidence that MJ abused anyone is dubious at best, whereas the widespread abuse of children by Catholic priests (affecting, at least, hundreds of people) and the subsequent coverups are a known fact.

[identity profile] wordfuzion.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It was definitely not meant to be an insult to Michael Jackson. Or the Catholic CHurch. Both are very near and dear to my heart, part of how I ended up who I am today. I'm just making the point the minute you start paying off "victims", suddenly you find out there's many more then originall expected.

I feel like it's an insult to the victims of clerical abuse. Unlike with MJ, I am unaware of any specific cases of alleged fraud of Catholic support payout funds. In general sexual abuse is way underreported, not overreported, and I have a knee-jerk 'oh you did not just go there' when it comes to broad, vague and unsubstantiated comments about fraudulent claims.

Sexual abuse is both underreported and overreported IMO. There are so many fraudulent claims, though, especially when there's a panic, like the Catholic church scandals (it's similar to the eighties when suddenly everyone was claiming that they had "repressed memories" of being molested by family members). Overall I think it is important to take sexual abuse claims seriously, but that doesn't mean that a vast number of them aren't false.

[personal profile] thene 2010-09-25 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Evidence, please? All the studies I've ever seen say that sexual abuse is no more overreported than any other crime.

I specifically didn't say that he was or wasn't guilty, as I personally haven't looked into it. I just said that his being a brilliant artist has nothing to do with it. That is, the OP seems to be saying, he's such a great musician he couldn't have done it. But that reasoning doesn't make any sense.

I will say I think it's really dangerous to dismiss people who come forward, because it always has the effect of discouraging people who were actually abused, thinking that no one will believe them (which is what their abusers tell them). Sure, there are scammers, but I'd rather there be a few scammers to let all the real cases come to light, than look at every person who comes forward with allegations as an opportunist.

Does vitiligo work that way? I can see why someone would get treatment or surgery to even out skin tone (especially if they were a pop celebrity) but is there no way to restore original skin tone in that case?
leucocrystal: (misc | music : darryl)

[personal profile] leucocrystal 2010-09-25 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)
As I've come to understand it, repigmentation treatments do exist now (though at the time of MJ's diagnosis, which either took place in the late '70s or early '80s, this was not the case), but their rate of success depends a lot on how severe the case is, even now. According to a longtime friend of MJ's, the artist David Nordahl, by the time he first met MJ in '88, he was already spotted over half of his face, down his neck, on his hands and up at least one arm. At that time he was still using large amounts of makeup to cover it up, but he would soon have to give up the ghost, so to speak, and use lighter and lighter shades as it worsened.

Depigmentation treatment, which seems to have been around longer, and is what MJ ultimately had to resort to because his vitiligo was so progressive (some people will just have it on the extremities, or in random little patches, as opposed to his, which was all over his body), is typically recommended when the patient has already lost pigment on about half their body.

I was exactly like this except I started liking him two years before he died.

Anyway, I'm glad he's motivating you, OP!

[identity profile] canthari.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I was like you before the day he died, i just let the media to flood my opinion about him but never actually cared of knowing how many of it was true. Then i found him, his music and legacy and i made a shit of myself for thinking that way.

I would never let it happen again.

[identity profile] wordfuzion.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Michael is the reason I don't read tabloids either. :) I'm glad he's inspiring you. Don't be sorry that you weren't a fan before his death, because it's the new fans that will continue to carry on his legacy. :)

(I was born an MJ fan...seriously. My mother has been in love with him since the Jackson Five days.)

Word, girl. (Also, icon love!) I was probably an MJ fan in the womb, my mother did prenatal aerobics to his music, haha.

I never cared for tabloids, but watching what they did to MJ assured me I could never, ever contribute a dime to that industry. And I too am always glad to see new fans.

Tbh watching his various documentaries and interviews made me realize "Jesus Christ, he's still a big kid who just loves fucking sleepovers"

I don't think he was a pedophile at all. I don't think he was even capable of it. It just seemed like he was trying to make up for a childhood he never had. Though it was borderlining on mental disorder territory.
leucocrystal: (misc | music : darryl)

[personal profile] leucocrystal 2010-09-24 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
True, and when you consider the context of his life, it's understandable. The stuff he went through as a kid (I'm currently reading his only decent biography) is just... it's insane. Sometimes I'm just sitting here like, "Man, how he even survived his own life to age 50 is kind of a miracle."

He was a complex guy; he could be very adult at times (typically with women, like Lisa Marie, Beyonce, etc.), and was a hell of a businessman. But he loved escapism, for obvious reasons, and I think he kind of put children up onto a pedestal because he'd been taken advantage of by adults ever since he was a kid, whereas all kids ever asked of him was to be entertained, not for money or whatever else. And yes, when he was on his own and just hanging out, he could be very kid-like, had a silly sense of humor, liked to play pranks, and just generally behave like a kid. And capable of harming a child? Never. On top of that, the amount of stuff he did to help children all over the world, which many people also don't know nearly the extent of, just doesn't fly with that at all. He really gave a damn.

I think the problem is that most people weren't able or willing to accept that one person could encapsulate all of these things. I think a lot of times people don't want to acknowledge that celebrities are just as complex as anyone else, because that humanizes them too much for our liking. [/longest FS comment ever, oh god]

I have always wondered what kind of parents would let a child sleep over at the house of an adult they barely know in the first place.

(Why yes, I AM commenting on this secret in three places! Apologies, OP. It just made me very happy to see it.)

I think it's awesome that he's inspiring you, anon! He actually inspired me to get back into dance this past year too, after being away for ages due to an old injury, and it's been great. I hope you find a good instructor/class/group to work with! It's fun and a great workout, and you can make great friends through it as well. I wish you luck with your stage fright, it's very brave of you to be working to get past that.

And yes, watching MJ live is... very, very nice, yes. ;)

[identity profile] dar-actually.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
This secret warms the cooling embers of my cold, cold heart.

My brother and I grew up being Michael Jackson fans. Stuff like this is always a treat to read. I don't comment on his personal life one way or the other, because it's a such a minefield of hearsay and conjecture that an objective examination of it seems to be impossible.
That being said, being Michael Jackson fans was probably the first step in the general distrust of the media that's led to me only getting my news from Jon Stewart >_>

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Whether or not the accusations were true is basically water under the bridge to me, but I have always thought his attitude toward children was creepy and inappropriate. However much he thought of himself as a "big kid," the REALITY was that he was an ADULT.

Anon, have you read my mind?
