Okay the vitiligo, I can see that people who haven't encountered it might not understand it. But his making great music doesn't have anything to do in either direction with whether he was actually guilty of those charges. (Unless of course you think that his years as a child star permanently messed up his boundaries, and that's why things may have happened.)

I mean, Phil Spector is a fucking genius, possibly the single best producer in the history of rock and roll. His contribution to popular music is so immense that it would take hours to fully describe it. And he's in jail for homicide. So yeah, you can be a great artist and do some fucked up shit. Happens all the time.

If you really read up on both molestation cases, there just wasn't enough evidence to clearly say "this man is a Pedophile!" And by paying off the first boy, well, he slit his own throat with that move, to be perfectly honest. Once you start putting money out, alot of "victims" start coming out of the woodwork. Look at the Priest Abuse scandal in the Catholic Church. Yes, there are legitimate victims, but they started coming out in huge numbers AFTER the Vatican began pay offs.

Yeah, there's just so much out there, if you're willing to look into it (which unfortunately most people are not) that screams "extortion!", I just can't believe how the media ran with it. The Charles Thomson article, One of the Most Shameful Episodes in Journalistic History, covers it pretty well, but that doesn't get into the 1993 thing. It sucks that he paid them off, it really does. I know he was pressured into it by his insurers, and he was basically having one of the worst periods of his life at the time, but still. Tom Mesereau was right; he could've won that case had it gone to trial, and it should have. Especially considering that Evan Chandler's actions speak louder than anything else (drugging his son, then later trying to kill him, etc). But the 2005 trial? God, what a joke, from beginning to end. It pisses me off.

Uh. Unlike the Catholic Church, Michael Jackson was not an institution that gave itself personal access to literal millions of children and then brushed known, admitted child abuse under the rug.

I'm not sure why you're making that comparison but I don't think it's a valid one, especially given that evidence that MJ abused anyone is dubious at best, whereas the widespread abuse of children by Catholic priests (affecting, at least, hundreds of people) and the subsequent coverups are a known fact.

[identity profile] wordfuzion.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It was definitely not meant to be an insult to Michael Jackson. Or the Catholic CHurch. Both are very near and dear to my heart, part of how I ended up who I am today. I'm just making the point the minute you start paying off "victims", suddenly you find out there's many more then originall expected.

I feel like it's an insult to the victims of clerical abuse. Unlike with MJ, I am unaware of any specific cases of alleged fraud of Catholic support payout funds. In general sexual abuse is way underreported, not overreported, and I have a knee-jerk 'oh you did not just go there' when it comes to broad, vague and unsubstantiated comments about fraudulent claims.

Sexual abuse is both underreported and overreported IMO. There are so many fraudulent claims, though, especially when there's a panic, like the Catholic church scandals (it's similar to the eighties when suddenly everyone was claiming that they had "repressed memories" of being molested by family members). Overall I think it is important to take sexual abuse claims seriously, but that doesn't mean that a vast number of them aren't false.

Evidence, please? All the studies I've ever seen say that sexual abuse is no more overreported than any other crime.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe not overall, but you seriously haven't heard of all the lawsuits that followed the "repressed memories" fad? Families were torn apart because of false accusations, and boy, people sued.

Yes, I have heard of them, but:
a) I have not heard of any that involved institutional abuse by Catholic priests - which isn't to say that there has never been any such thing, only that it's not worthy of comparison with the golddiggers who hounded MJ,
b) The numbers don't match up. You're describing a few lawsuits that went down with massive publicity, versus the upwards of 75% of sexual assaults that are never reported at all.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I was just talking about sex abuse in general, the Catholic priest scandal is relatively new, so obviously there's no way to tell just yet like there is with the incest moral panic of the 80s*, but the skeptic in me believes that certainly all of these accusations can't be true (though many of them are, and I agree that it's a major problem).

Also, whenever there is money involved, there are going to be people coming out of the woodwork trying to swindle some, which is unfortunate to the real victims and their families.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I specifically didn't say that he was or wasn't guilty, as I personally haven't looked into it. I just said that his being a brilliant artist has nothing to do with it. That is, the OP seems to be saying, he's such a great musician he couldn't have done it. But that reasoning doesn't make any sense.

I will say I think it's really dangerous to dismiss people who come forward, because it always has the effect of discouraging people who were actually abused, thinking that no one will believe them (which is what their abusers tell them). Sure, there are scammers, but I'd rather there be a few scammers to let all the real cases come to light, than look at every person who comes forward with allegations as an opportunist.

Does vitiligo work that way? I can see why someone would get treatment or surgery to even out skin tone (especially if they were a pop celebrity) but is there no way to restore original skin tone in that case?

As I've come to understand it, repigmentation treatments do exist now (though at the time of MJ's diagnosis, which either took place in the late '70s or early '80s, this was not the case), but their rate of success depends a lot on how severe the case is, even now. According to a longtime friend of MJ's, the artist David Nordahl, by the time he first met MJ in '88, he was already spotted over half of his face, down his neck, on his hands and up at least one arm. At that time he was still using large amounts of makeup to cover it up, but he would soon have to give up the ghost, so to speak, and use lighter and lighter shades as it worsened.

Depigmentation treatment, which seems to have been around longer, and is what MJ ultimately had to resort to because his vitiligo was so progressive (some people will just have it on the extremities, or in random little patches, as opposed to his, which was all over his body), is typically recommended when the patient has already lost pigment on about half their body.
