You can still call yourself a fan. You don't need to know every detail about Clark Kent's life and history to be a fan. If you enjoy any aspect of it, be that the comics or the tv shows or the films, then you're a fan.

Thanks. It sounds sappy, but it actually makes me feel better :) It's just that I have the feeling I'd need to know a LOT more about Superman than the obvious info.

But as someone else said, there's always the wiki to keep me up to date... in a way :)

this is why i can't get into long-running american mainstream comics. despite the first anon who commented being totally right about what constitutes a fan, it... bothers me to not know the years and years and years and years and years of history behind some characters. :\

I know, right? I feel... kinda "left out", even though I could still read up on it. I guess that's why I mostly stuck to manga... they do end one day and you have the chance to read all the material there is.

I am absolutely sure that no one has read absolutely EVERYTHING about Superman. You don't have to know every minute detail, OP. That's the thing with American comics in general. There are jumping on points throughout the history and generally anything you NEED to know will be mentioned, alluded to. Also, that's what Wiki is for.

So love on, dear OP. :) Anyone who thinks less of you for not knowing everything is an ass and most likely a complete hypocrite. :)

Aw, thanks a lot :) I don't know why, but I always had the feeling I needed to know more. I mean, sure, I can still read up on it. But I guess it's a bit different when you've actually read the source material and not just an overview or synopsis.

OP, Superman's been in my life since before I knew what anything was and I don't know everything about the guy. I don't own every comic book, I've missed a few episodes of Smallville, I haven't played every video game with him in it, but I'm still his #1 fan ok.

Which reminds me of how awesome his fans usually are. They aren't a bunch of crazy fucks. Come join the dark side, anon. EMBRACE.

I know exactly how you feel, but comics fandom is a different sort of place than most fandoms--it has to be, because like you said, for the big characters there's just TOO MUCH CANON. Only one person in the world claims to have read everything with Superman in it (Mark Waid) and I have my doubts about him, lol. Every single one of us assembles our own canon from the scraps and pieces of canon we can get our hands on and have time to read. That means you can't assume people share your background, which can be daunting when writing, but please DON'T assume that everyone has read a lot of stuff and knows a lot more than you do. Believe you me, there are a lot of people in the fandom that have barely ever picked up a comic book. What matters is we love Clark (or Bruce or Dick or Diana) and want to squee together! That's all you need! These characters are huge symbols and you can love what they stand for and are without much canon knowledge at all. :)

and hey, why not read some then? I don't think there's very many people who've read EVERY Superman comic. Find out what the really classic/iconic ones are and start there! There's so much cool shit in the world of comics, man, so if you're really into him you can just dive in and see what you like. Not because you HAVE TO or else you're ~not a fan~ or anything, just cause you'll probably like em. =)

I've actually started to read some :) Just a little while ago I bought a recent issue (well "recent", it was from 2006, but still XD) and I also happened to find the wedding issue on ebay :)

I might look for other issues on a comic fair that's every four months in my city :) Usually, the traders there have a bunch of Superman stuff.

True, we're still fans. It's just that I sometimes feel... "inferior" as a fan just because I lack some info. It's really stupid, but sometimes that feeling creeps up on me.

i know how you feel, i'm just getting into tabletop rpg's and the d&d in-jokes drive me crazy :-)

i think as long as you admit to yourself you're new and don't pretend to yourself that you should know everything and hold yourself to unreasonable demands of canon knowledge, you'll be okay

there's literally 7 decades of superman/dc history. and then most of it got retconned in crisis on infinite earths in 1985. and then tons of other crap happened after that.

us comic book canon is one of the most complex collaboratively-created shared universes ever. i've been in comics fandom on and off since i was a kid, and since i'm in an off period right now, i've missed out on tons of stuff that's happened in recent years, like grant morrison's "52" run. idek what's going on there, too complicated.
