No, that's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is that there are badasses in your fandoms (RE and L4D) that you are choosing to ignore and dismiss as lame, or badly written, or whatever. Which is not cool.

I can appreciate if you don't want to dress like Ada Wong on a day to day basis, but I really don't see how she's any worse than Leon, and there's still other ladies in the series to pick from.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2010-09-25 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
You were saying originally about how travis touchdown and leon are 'good writing'. I am not sure how that is relevant to the fact that most female characters are lame-os.

Ada wong? Why would you even mention her? you read the secret but you missed the part about the fuck off high heels? She falls too hard into the stereotypiucal 'sex fatale catagory'. She's running in an evening dress and high heels, might as well be in a bathing suit for all I care. Its the same basic thing.

What other ladies? SHEVA? same problemo... we cant have hear wearing same thing chris wears, has to be over feminized (is that a word?)
I just cant care for her, there is no enough something for both Jill and Her (I like Jill better anyways, but I honeslty enjoy leon more, especially considering she is more of a SIDE character as opposed to the main one).

Again, what games rock hard in the female catagory? you seem much more versed in the gaming universe than I am. I would love some serious recs from someone sho has seen better

Because they aren't lame-os, especially if your barometer for a good character is Leon and Travis.

Ada wong? Why would you even mention her?

As an example of a character who is not a "lame-o," while acknowledging your point about women in games needing better clothing.

What other ladies? SHEVA? same problemo... we cant have hear wearing same thing chris wears, has to be over feminized

You call that over-feminized? Just switch out her low chunk heels for flats, problem solved.

I just cant care for her, there is no enough something for both Jill and Her (I like Jill better anyways, but I honeslty enjoy leon more, especially considering she is more of a SIDE character as opposed to the main one).

I'm not completely sure what you even said here, but uh, Jill had her own game, if you didn't notice. In which she was the main character.

Again, what games rock hard in the female catagory? you seem much more versed in the gaming universe than I am. I would love some serious recs from someone sho has seen better

I think it's sort of telling that you don't seem to notice the girls in the games that you already do play. But, off the top of my head... Half-Life 2, Phoenix Wright (all of 'em), Beyond Good and Evil, Prince of Persia (SoT and PoP4 only, though, I'd say), Baldur's Gate 2, KOTOR 1 and 2, Dragon Age, Mass Effect/ME2, Odin Sphere, Grim Grimoire, Final Fantasy (though this is very hit-and-miss), Persona (also problematic, but Chie is worth looking up if you want fashion), Zelda (If you don't mind a little bland), Chrono Trigger, the first Parasite Eve, Threads of Fate, Bioshock 1 and 2, Dark Cloud, Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, Iji, Mirror's Edge, Silent Hill (3 for Heather, especially), Perfect Dark (just the first), Metal Gear Solid 3, Fire Emblem... Given what you've said I doubt it suits your taste, but I'm personally fond of DMC and Bayonetta for over-the-top-cheesy-tongue-in-cheek-badass.

If you don't mind RPGs, I'd especially recommend KOTOR2. Kreia is the best thing in life.

Oh, forgot about Uncharted.

Anyway. I'd never deny that the industry is sexist and often totally bullshit, but there are options - and RE and L4D are games I would consider to be fairly decent on that front.

Re: OP

Might as well throw in metroid prime, but not the latest where they totally ruined her. Gawd.

I agree with OP - sheva, ada =/= chris, leon.

Just too bitchy, serious, too much focus on tits and being a sex appeal.
Even jill, did you not see her in mini skirt and boots? thats the new outfit man.

Prince of persia? the female is the sidekick.

All of them are OVERLY femenine, lacking good one liners and banter for the most part, never wanting to get laid while looking fantastically sexy and alluring.

Re: OP

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I completely disagree. I don't appreciate the "necessary" sex appeal, but it doesn't really negate them as characters, or make them any less capable. And I don't see how Ada is any more serious than Leon, for instance.

As for Prince of Persia... Both SoT and POP4 are games with like, 3 people in them. Elika and Farah are sidekicks but it doesn't make them bad characters or worthless characters just because they aren't in the spotlight.

What the hell, why are they overly feminine? Farah and Elika are both full of one-lines and banter, and both active characters with their own agendas. For Farah, there's that whole scene in the baths, though who knows if it was a dream or not, and there is a whole scene in PoP4 about Elika checking out the Prince's ass while he climbs up in front of her.

OP

I like Elika . I have her outfit X)

I was checking out both their asses.
Easiest one since its actually something that was 'in' at the time. But unlike her I wear shoes.

The sex appeal thing changes their actual behaviour though.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2010-09-25 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
I dont consider ada wong fun enough for me to fangirl over.
Shes the typical bitchy sex appeal? pretty, yeah, but all the same. no cool one liners, no badass laser avoiding jumps or chair sitting... jsut lacks the little things, including punful one liners.

A lot of the games you mention have the SAME female character.

We dont get the action packed unapologetic female loudmouth with terrible puns, a shirt that doesnt shepard the boobs and that doesnt act like shes trying to lure every male within 10 miles. Sometimes they are whiny to boot.

Its like... well those one faced female characters are like in scott pilgrim. I would like a female scott pilgrim character.
Otherwise they are all like ramona flowers (movie verse):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manic_Pixie_Dream_Girl

Kinda MEH outside her looks. Which are of course much more fussy and complicated than scott's.

Try to use it as a metaphor to see what i mean about male vs female characters in vid games. females look all pretty and shit, and thats about it. there is nothing *fun* about it. no banter. unless its bitchy.

Also a huge part of the secret was about the choice of attire. throughout your choices, a lot fit into my catagory of fail.

Its not that i ignore female characters or hate them instinctively. I am just noticing the sameness and the lameness.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2010-09-25 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
All I'm getting from this comment is "Girls are whiny bitchy sluts, men are always better,"

Re: OP

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Fucking thank you.

OP

(Anonymous) 2010-09-25 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
well, that *IS* my gist. Well minus the slut part. Just because you dress sexy ALL the time and play a femme fatale doesnt mean you're a slut, RL or game.

In video games? they totally are! and men ARE better (better lines, better roles, better banter, more main roles, etc).

I repeat - in video games. In a ratio of the larger portion of them, not all.

OP

(Anonymous) 2010-09-25 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Likewise.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2010-09-25 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
you're forgetting that there's a lot of sameyness for male characters, too. how many times have we seen characters just like leon or scott pilgrim or whoever else, really?

honestly, OP, i feel like you're judging all these characters as WOMEN rather than people, and are holding them to this specific standard and image that you don't hold for men. it's fine that you don't wanna dress femininely, of course, but it's not fine to go "feminine = bad" and totally write off a female character because she wears heels or is attractive or whatever the hell, despite the fact that she is perfectly cool otherwise.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2010-09-25 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
There is totally sameness. But I am making a point that the sameness for females is on a worse level than sameness for males.

In general if you like the portrayal of women in that, you are good, if it makes you cringe hard, its aweful.

There are some female characters I love plenty: Heather, violette, elika, jeniffer (from rule of rose)... but they are few and far in between.
Now name me characters which are: a sharp dressed genetically engineered assassin.
a professor in a far away village solving puzzles.
a young smartass kid aspiring to be the greatest pirate in the caribbean.
a loudmouth jerk who likes wrestling and anime.
an assasin with 7 alternative personalities

All of these are male.
A lot of the male characters are more action oriented. cuss more, less apologetic, less politically correct, funnier. less bothered to look sexy. they are somehow free-er. and thats liberating in a game sometimes.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2010-09-25 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
stating that they're male doesn't necessarily mean anything, because i couldn't name other MEN who fit those exact roles either, since you're describing very specific characters (and are also describing what they DO, in their SETTING, not really their personalities). however, if you were to generalize them even more, you would find a million characters who fit those same tropes. how many times have we seen loudmouth jerks? how many times have we seen the smart, collected type? how many times have we seen smartass kids?

you don't go into the same detail with female characters, and instead, you just IMMEDIATELY skip to their general trope and dismiss them as nothing but that. of course female characters are going to be boring to you if you see a pretty face and go "she's only here for eye candy," or see a girl who is outwardly upset about an important issue she's facing and go "she's just whiny."

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2010-09-25 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
I am just trying to point out that there are less or no females cast into wider variety of roles and games. Some of those roles are being filled by only males, whereas in RE and l4d series you have both male and female characters filling the same role (survivors) and you can choose which one you like based on character. You forget this is not really a book - in games what they do and how they look like and what they say and how they interact = their personality.

well are there really female assasins of the cold collected type? on par with hitman? or maybe even hard rain.
How about the really eccentric game types of killer 7?
the most I can come up with is equating mirrors edge with assassins creed. regardless of if you like or hate one- in assassins creed there was more interaction between characters.

yes, she can be utterly upset about an issue, but does it mean she has to suck? be worse than the male character and need his help all the time? demand his attention because hes ignoring her like a kid?
this situation is more likely than you think.

Its not the eye candy thing, its mostly the lines + role + apperence.

I can leave or take a male character and call him just eye candy. but why do I have to celebrate every single female character becuase they are decent and not take it or leave it like the male ones.

a lot of the female characters lack agressivness and shamelesness. and if they have that a lot of it usually gets translated into sexual flaunting. And whats worse that a lot of times if there is a female character she is going to become a love interest. Less likely to happen if she were male.

re: assassins - Pretty much all the ladies in No More Heroes and Kill Bill (if movies count), and also quite a few in Ace Attorney. I'm pretty sure MGS had some.

Have you even considered Claire Redfield?

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2010-09-25 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
She's cool.

I am not really in the RE series fandom though, I played them and loved RE 4 the best for various reasons. I liked her but she didnt really stand out to me (which is fine, plenty of male characters which are cool too I dont care for). As always one ridiculous outfit. Is there a colour scheme for zombie fighting girls? third female wearing same. but no matter about that.
