10 years and 6 fandoms have only made it clear that all fandoms have their share of wank, drama and petty fights over similar topics. Anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves. I also think fandom requires a certain type of personality - anyone who can't deal with drama and wank and petty fights without becoming part of the problem, [myself included] would be better of staying the hell away from fandom. I only wish it hadn't taken me so long to figure that out... should have realized it 4 fandoms ago.

Over the years I've learned to deal by generally refusing to take fandom drama seriously, but it takes a really thick skin and high tolerance for wankery that most fans who, as you say, are not part of the problem don't have the stomach for. Those sorts of fans can usually find little pockets of sanity in the madness and pretty much stay there exclusively, so it might be those fans telling newbies that there's no wank or drama, but they're so used to their own little corner of fandom they've lost perspective.

The worst part is I thought I HAD found a small non-wanky corner of fandom in my last fandom. And I thought I knew what to avoid... of course it turns out that I ended up having people on my friends list who started getting far more intense about certain elements of the show than I wanted to deal with (and even worse I had people on opposite sides of a petty debate that was brewing). It got to a point where the best thing I could do for all invloved was shut down my journal and walk away.

Of course *I* got labeled the drama queen even though I left so I wouldn't get into the middle of drama. I guess leaving fandom is always seen as a flounce even if it's done for the purposes of stopping something before it has a chance to happen.

Princess Tutu is indeed a small fandom. It is also a fandom that describes itself as tolerant and fun, but is actually teeming with backbiting, intolerant tarts.

That's odd. I've been in the fandom for over a year now and it seems fun and friendly to me! I don't see the character bashing and all of these things anon mentioned in the secret, so I'm really confused. Those are some hefty accusations to make.

As much as I love Princess Tutu, I've seen (even here on fandom secrets) character bashing. Especially when it's shipping wise. The "I hate Rue so much" secret from a while ago comes to mind.

I guess this anon is alone in this, but...

I don't take secret comms like this seriously. These people who say these things don't come out and make character bashing posts or graphics or something to spread. So what's the harm? Okay, so they hate a certain character. That's fine and dandy. They can't stop me from loving them with a silly secret!

I just don't see how the fandom deserves to be tarnished as an unwelcoming and nasty place because of something posted on a comm that's meant for wank and bashing 99.9% of the time.

Why would anyone ever tell a fandom newbie, "Go away. We don't want you in our mess of wank."

Even in the wankiest of fandoms, there's nothing wrong with being welcoming. It's possible to come in, and find a few awesome friends to avoid the drama and still fan together with.

It's also possible that the people who say it's not dramatic really believe that it's not. Even in small fandoms there are different sections. People who RP might not be talking with the people who draw art or purely discuss plot. Some people might not see the drama. Some people might not think it's a big deal and still be having fun anyway?

Don't assume that the people who are praising their own fandom are hypocrites. It's highly possible that they really do luv their fandom.

I think it was more that they tell newbies that there isn't any wank, rather than saying that they didn't want them in it. Or at least that's how I took it.

Which is odd to me, every fandom has wank. Even the smaller fandoms I'm in, like the Darkest Powers fandom, had shipping wars back in the day.

If they're talking about what I think though, while it obviously does have wank, I've not really ever seen anyone getting really insulting/condescending over anything. Maybe because you have to be really into the fandom in the first place to know enough to wank about it.

Yeah, pretty much this. I only stick to the LJ communities that cater to the UC fandom and don't venture out. And I've never dealt with any drama there, or heard of any drama in the LJ communities. But I've heard of people dealing with wank at Gaia, FF.net, DeviantART, TV tropes, and youtube concerning UC/Gundam fandom. And I'm like, "Oh, really? I didn't know about that. :-/ "

Then again, the latter sites are known for being wanky in general. >_>

In my experience through several fandoms, however, some fandoms have decidedly less drama than others. And that those tend to be the more inclusive variety. I mean, sure megaten has it's wank and even some really bizarre pairing tensions (though we tend to mock those who participate in them more than get involved) but it is practically sunshine, roses, and lolipops compared to how the TB/X fandom used to be.

Drama-free fandom? Oh honey, there is not such thing. There is nothing drama free. Nothing. I mean fandom is made of people and people fight and debate over everything, it's human nature and there is nothing wrong with it unless you let it overtake everything or take it too seriously. If your fandom has little drama then consider it truly blessed and yourself lucky, the fact that you can say that there are times of peace and that the fighting doesn't overtake the fandom is awesome.

Three words came to my head while reading this secret: overseas UTAU fandom. Small fandom? Check, it's basically really small. Shipwars? Mainly when it involved Vocaloids, but check. People being delusional and trying to keep themselves in an illusion of a clean, fun fandom? Heck, check like crazy. Doesn't help that a few BNFs/semi-BNFs sometimes are, if you pardon my word, huge bitches and even bigger attention whores.
