So what you're saying is you got pulled into the system and lost your objectivity and sense of humor. Shame. You'd better tell your friend how you really feel: Your now humble sense of privilege makes you feel more enlightened than him/her.

[identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"Someone actually called me out on it when I spewed hateful language and stereotypes! OPPRESSION! NOW WE SEE THE VIOLENCE INHERENT IN THE SYSTEM!"

Fuck's sake get some perspective. The big scary feminists aren't stealing you away in the middle of the night and Room 101-ing you.

[identity profile] kitty-wake.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Because everyone knows that you can't have any humour without being as un-PC as hell.

What the fuck is wrong with you lot, seriously? Can you not imagine humour that doesn't hurt someone?

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Well come on, a huge amount of humour is about making fun of people in a way that could be construed as hurtful, but probably isn't. Not always in a way that is racist, sexist or homophobic, but just individual, like "Haha remember when so-and-so totally did that embarrassing thing? What an idiot!". But that doesn't really hurt anyone. Instead of eliminating many forms of humour, can't we work towards a societal place where gay or racist jokes are considered just as silly and abstract and generally inoffensive as blonde jokes? Otherwise I can't really imagine much will be left except some knock-knock jokes, and not even all of those.

i get what you're saying, but this place will never exist. it can't exist. there are histories involved here that aren't going to go away.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
because blonde jokes aren't rooted in misogyny, no sirree

(Anonymous) 2010-10-09 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
If somebody wanted to make jokes about misogyny now, they might as well just make "lol wimmin" jokes instead of going for one particular hair colour. And no matter what they started off as, if you make a blonde joke nowadays, it is not regarded as very offensive - obviously you personally may find it offensive, but it's not exactly on the same level as racist slurs, is it? Because almost everybody knows that your hair colour has bugger all to do with how intelligent you are, and it's so pathetic as a real insult that nobody would ever bother using it. So what I'm saying is that it would be nice if gay/racist/whatever jokes were like that too, just stupid holdovers from a time when we were more prejudiced but that are now considered to be useless as insults and are just used among friends to take the piss instead of to oppress or harm.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-09 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
*shrug* I grew up hearing blonde jokes told side-by-side with Polish jokes, and Polish jokes are pretty clearly racist, even though most people don't actually think the Polish are stupid. Like, I don't think blonde jokes are THE MOST OFFENSIVE THINGS IN THE WORLD, but it seems obvious to me that they're rooted in misogyny. And we're not really talking about making jokes among friends, are we? We're talking about trolling over-PC people in a "public" place, which seems different to me.

inoffensive as blonde jokes

Um.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-09 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god do people really get offended by blonde jokes?

(Anonymous) 2010-10-09 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
... Because blonde jokes are clearly on the same level as racist jokes, right?

You're clearly part of the problem.

[identity profile] 0o0f.livejournal.com 2010-10-09 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Well no.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
But I mean, anti-PC/whatever isn't inherently objective, is it? I've never met someone who hates on the "PC police" who's objective, anyway. Maybe you have.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-09 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
That's, uh, not quite what happened. What happened was that I began to see what an ignorant asshole I was and that the society we live in is really a lot more racist, misogynistic, homophobic and transphobic than I wanted to admit to myself.

It was never about the lolracistjokes for me, it was about being overdefensive and refusing to acknowledge my own privelege and the fact that the society I live in is as fucked up as it is.

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Well if they're still harassing people, you may want to start by telling them that that isn't cool (or something along those lines.).

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
You seriously don't know how to tell this to your friend?
You've just phrased it in your secret. Hit copy and paste and send your friend the text - voila! Or are you just afraid of their reaction?

OP

(Anonymous) 2010-10-09 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Their reaction. She was never big on actually trolling people, she just read the stuff and made fun of it with me. I don't know how to get her to see that actually we were being ignorant jerks.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2010-10-09 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Can I offer you some advice, OP? It's okay if you disagree; and I say this is as someone who is a ~fandom feminist~. I don't think that she'll appreciate your trying to convince her to change her mind, and if the issue is just that the things that she says make you uncomfortable, you can say that, you know? Like, hey if you don't mind, I don't really think these jokes are funny anymore. I mean, I'm not saying that YOU'LL NEVER AGREE ON ANYTHING AGAIN, but you've got to pick your battles and if you're worried that she's going to react poorly if you do start arguing with her - then, don't. If she is your friend you'll eventually be able to engage in this kind of discussion with her (if you still want to) but it doesn't have to be right away, you know?

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2010-10-09 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
I think I might try that, but I kind of doubt she'll listen at all. Thanks for the advice, though.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2010-10-09 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Glad you grew some compassion, OP.

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2010-10-09 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
It's almost as bad if you used to be one of them and then started realizing you'd tricked yourself into thinking flying off the handle all the time would save the world. Because once you turn away from them you really get it.

The ones who don't know you speak the lingo very well, thanks start telling you to "use Google" as if you can't. As if you didn't. As if you never used that line on other people.

The ones who do know you wonder why you've fallen so, and decide you must be weak and the world got you.

It kinda sucks, though it does tell you who to avoid.

You very quickly learn how to tell the SJers who are in it because this shit matters to them from the SJers who are in it for wank and some twisted sort of prestige.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2010-10-09 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
the SJers who are in it because this shit matters to them from the SJers who are in it for wank and some twisted sort of prestige - Sadly, there's still far too many people who don't recognize a difference.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2010-10-09 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
Are you so certain your friend is dismissive of the root cause of the comments you guys used to make fun of? Because maybe they're just annoyed with the extremism employed to criticize it in these comms, but they respect the recognition of sexism, racism, whatever, and admit it exists in places. There is a difference.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-10 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Just say it whatever way comes most naturally for you. Like "Oldself did ungoodthink with you but now newself only does doubleplusgoodthink for sake of doubleplusgood socialjustice."
