I think it's very difficult for writers to become a BNF. Because... some people just don't read. They only like to look at pictures.

So don't lose your courage!

(Anonymous) 2010-10-14 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
That's quite true, unfortunately. Still, I won't let that deter me.

Thanks for the encouragement!

First off, you're doing it in the wrong fandom. Not that there's anything wrong with APH or anything, it's just that in a ginormous fandom like that you ARE probably going to get drowned out by other authors who already be BNF's or who the community likes more.

However, if this definitely is the fandom you want to get known in, I suggest writing a pairing or focusing on a character that few people do. (And that YOU LIKE.) That way, people in fandom will associate you with the character/pairing (provided you're a good author and people like your fics).

This, pretty much.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-14 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think I'm in the right track, hopefully. Thank you for the advice!

[identity profile] reaperangelique.livejournal.com 2010-10-13 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Keep trying! But remember, if you do get to BNF status, don't let it go to your head ^^; and always try to enjoy what you write, don't try to please everyone else.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-14 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
It most definitely won't, believe me. Thank you!

[identity profile] dragonimp.livejournal.com 2010-10-13 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of becoming a BNF is just happenstance and timing.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-14 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Timing is a compelling factor, indeed.

I'll just try to remain optimistic. I won't lose anything if I keep like a mindset like that, I suppose.

Yeah, if you want to be a Hetalia BNF, maybe you should build a time machine and go back to 2008?

(Anonymous) 2010-10-13 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I seriously don't understand why people want to become BNF. Mostly they're just drama queens who have whored themselves to be "popular".

(Anonymous) 2010-10-13 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Get a paid account. Now, this won't help you become a BNF, but it will make you realize that way more people are reading your fics than you think. I hang out in Star Trek, and for every one review I get, at least 300 people actually read the damn thing. For APH, this number might even be larger than that.

Of course, if you're one of those review counters, this is really depressing, but it does help you feel a bit more appreciated otherwise. :)

(Anonymous) 2010-10-14 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely didn't see it that way. Thanks for pointing that out!

[identity profile] grazie.livejournal.com 2010-10-13 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you think you're not worthwhile if you're not a BNF? Because you are anon. Everyone is worthwhile in some way, whether or not people acknowledge it.

I used to do the same thing with playing America, and it took me falling apart and having to pick up the pieces to realize that even if no one else ever noticed me, I was still worthwhile.

I hope you realize that. ♥

(Anonymous) 2010-10-14 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Your words touch my heart, anon. Thank you.

Same!Anon as above.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-14 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
And sorry for calling you as anon a while ago! I guess I was just into typing overdrive. I realized my mistake just now.

I apologize, and I really mean what I said. Thanks for everything!

As much as I want to have blind faith in you, kid, it's totally unlikely. Unless you have something really crazy going for you, there's no way one is gonna stand out from a crowd of some... thirty thousand? And that's just counting the fans on LJ. You'd really have had to be here since forever ago. Which you weren't, because time travel is not okay.

HOWEVER! Why on earth do you want to be a BNF? Didn't you see what happened to Mithrigil and Puella? Why not just be a high-ranking fan, who gets a good number of reviews on their fics and is well-liked? Why you gotta expose yourself to that kind of pressure and scrutiny?

...Wow, that came out sounding bitchier than I expected. Uhhh. Believe in yourself?

To become a BNF if often just a thing of luck. Not all the good writers become BNFs, you know.

But really, I'd almost wish for you not to become a BNF. Yes, it brings lots of problems like trolling, wank in your back and others. But also, once someone becomes a BNF it becomes unreacheable and more often than not someone whiny who cares more about getting reviews than the people behind those reviews. This coming from someone who feels defeated for trying to befriend BNFs for so long and not being succesful because of being a nobody without talent...

If you really, really want to become an important person in the fandom, I wish you the best of lucks. But please, don't become an elitist conceited bitch...

Well, if this is important to you then I guess, good luck to you anon! Just remember that achieving a BNF status can be... not so fun. The pressure and trolling can be really unpleasant.

That said, keep trying! Hope you'll make it :>

Well, this is complicated, and the short answer is there's no guarantee, ever. There are talented people in fandom who are frankly much more talented than BNFs and go unrecognized their entire fandom careers, and there are people who aren't very talented at all who get a significant amount of recognition.

It isn't always a reflection on your ability if you don't get "famous". A lot of being a BNF is being social and meeting people and being active and a visible contribution in communities. It isn't always quality, but quantity, and reliability. Someone who posts fantastic works only every once in a while will be less popular than someone who posts less-fantastic work on a regular basis. Fandom as a whole has an incredibly short memory.

That said, a number of my buddies in the old crowd BNF club have jumped fandom recently, so if you're going to try this might be the time :|a
