I love how everyone in this community gets so up in arms about anything vaguely homophobic, but furry-bashing is a-ok

Welcome to F!S

Agreed.

+1

furries sure are like gay people, ayep

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2010-10-13 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
idk, I think there's a very big difference between bashing someone's sexual identity and bashing someone's fetish. We all have weird fetishes, and that's fine-- what's not fine is INSISTING that everyone immediately accept our fetish and like our fetish and then whining constantly about "fursecution".

[identity profile] aquaricom.livejournal.com 2010-10-13 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
i dont know what you mean by "immediately accept" but from what I've noticed on the interwebs from the last 12 years, is that the Furry community is pretty damn self contained.
You seem to be implying that they shove a fetish in your face when I personally find that pretty hard to believe.
They have their own art sites, market sites, their own games, their own social hubs, their own conventions... they really have kept to themselves for a pretty long time.

I heard the "fursecution" stuff started after a episode of CSI that completely lampooned them out of nowhere, and then it was from there that Furries became okay to ridicule. Either way it totally comes off as bullying to me..

(Anonymous) 2010-10-14 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
Furry-bashing was around before that episode, but I'm sure it didn't help.

[identity profile] xydexx.livejournal.com 2010-10-27 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a strawman argument, though. Nobody's "insisting" that everyone immediately "accept their fetish", and nobody's "whining constantly" about "fursecution", but man, people love to recklessly throw these claims around at furries instead of taking responsibility for their own anti-social behavior online.

Furries are just people who like anthropomorphic animals. It's a hobby, not a fetish. It's harmless. It's fun. It doesn't affect you. Build a bridge and get over it.

TLDR: Inter-geek infighting is stupid and lame. Don't do it.

[identity profile] joshuwain.livejournal.com 2010-10-27 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
A good point. There are enough people pointing and laughing rather than just -well- self-editing or turning the mirror on themselves. Why fight or continue to propagate derisive humor in amongst ourselves? It gets no one anywhere and serves to smash down someone else in the process.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2010-10-27 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
oh hey old post. well, it probably could have been emphasized better, but my main point was meant to be that it is dumb to compare furry-hate to homophobia. and i think that's especially true if you only consider furry fandom a hobby.

[identity profile] joshuwain.livejournal.com 2010-10-27 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's not as much a "hobby" as it is a fannish sub-culture: a group of folk with similar, combined traits, y'know?

It makes for interesting consideration: the difference between "sub-culture" and "hobby". To me, the first arises from the second (not to mention many other things).

I dunno; does that make sense?

[identity profile] xydexx.livejournal.com 2010-10-27 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Old post, but if the Flying Spaghetti Monster didn't intend for people to reply to old posts he wouldn't have created a way to reply.

As I mentioned in my other post (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomsecrets/569323.html?thread=361864427#t361864427), it's not the best analogy, but there are definite parallels (i.e., both are based on fear and hatred, both are subject to the same sort of irrational self-loathing), and certainly not as dumb as some of the batshit misconceptions about Furry fandom I've heard over the years (i.e., that it's a fetish or that any self-respecting Furry fan seriously uses the term "fursecution").

Dude...

(Anonymous) 2010-10-14 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
You are comparing a sexual identity to a fandom? Seriously?

This. :|

Re: Dude...

(Anonymous) 2010-10-14 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno, it makes sense to me. It's not exactly a "fandom" in the sense of like, Star Trek fandom or something. People seem to think of it as a pretty intrinsic part of their identity, whether it's a sexual thing or not.

[identity profile] snowdevil-crow.livejournal.com 2010-10-14 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Though bashing furries is kind of shitty, I don't think you can really compare the two.

[identity profile] cherryfission.livejournal.com 2010-10-14 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
One of the commenters above made a good point. A lot of furs consider it a part of their identity. Others just think of it as a fandom. Either way, I don't think bashing it is acceptable at all. *shrug* People like what they like, and if it's not causing anyone physical or emotional harm, I don't see what the problem is.

[identity profile] xydexx.livejournal.com 2010-10-27 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, you can, when you think about it:

  • People who bash furries usually do so out of ignorance and fear. Same thing homophobes do.
  • People who like anthropomorphic animals go around denying they're Furry fans. Same thing closeted gays do.

I'm not saying Furry fans are discriminated in housing or employment or whatever (so we can preempt the oft-parroted but ultimately irrelevant catcalls of "FURSECUTION" from the folks in the peanut gallery who have nothing of substance to contribute to the discussion), but having been an active participant in Furry fandom for well over a decade, in all honesty comparing ignorance about Furry fandom to homophobia makes a lot more sense than some of the totally batshit misconceptions I've heard over the years.
