Having a crush on an anthropomorphic character as a kid doesn't necessarily make you a furry.
That being said, why would it matter even if that was the case? What do you have against furries?

1.) You were only a wee little kid.
2.) Liking a cartoon character or even having a little crush on a cartoon character doesn't make you a furry. Being part of the furry fandom makes you a furry. Unless you're not taking part in the fandom, why bother labeling yourself? Are all people who dress in black gothics? I don't think so.
3.) As long as you don't fuck animals I can't see anything sick in being a furry.

Also, in response to the secret, in eighth grade I had huge crushes on both Shadow the Hedgehog and Rokusho from Medabots. I admit this; I loved both characters and didn't think too much at the time about the fact they weren't human. I don't consider myself a furry or whatever the robot equivalent is - robosexual? - and don't consider my eighth-grade self to be as such, either. You don't have to label yourself unless you want to, and especially if it's a one-time thing like your one-time crush on Sonic. No worries, OP!

Actually, no. Being part of a furry fandom doesn't make you a furry at all. It is where people who ID as furries tend to hang out, but they're not the only ones in furry fandoms by any means.

yeah dont get caught up in stupid furry labels, being a kid with a crush is totally different, if someone wants to give you a hard time just point out how original making fun of furries is..seriously. Psshhh, that doesn't make you a furry, anon. I think it's quite common for kids to crush on anthropomorphic characters. I had a crush on Rocko from Rocko's Modern Life when I was young (I think it was the accent).

I wonder a lot about things just like this actually. What percentage of furries today would cite specific sources as influences on them when they were younger: Sonic? Transformers Beast Wars? Ecco? Animorphs? Narnia? Marvel/DC? (Coincidentally, hooray for the 90s!)

I don't think it works much the other way, meaning not many people who played Sonic associate with furries, but probably many who do associate played (or at least liked) Sonic, and the other listed things.

It's simple:

When you're younger, you will find the aspects of characters attractive rather than their appearance. You're too young mentally to appreciate sex so there's nothing wrong with your mind fancying a character which happens to be an animal or a robot - because you're not saying "wow, I want to fuck a fox" you're saying "I really adore how nice and sweet and caring Disney's Robin Hood is".

When you get older and can appreciate sex then you can start labelling yourself whatever you want. A child's mind just doesn't work like an adult one. It's why there's a law of consent. And I'm pretty sure when you were younger you weren't imagining Sonic sticking his blue dick into your vajayjay: you were imagining him caring for you and you caring back.

In all seriousness, liking anthropomorphic animals by definition¹ means you're a Furry fan.

¹ i.e., how Furry has been defined for the past thirty years, not the recent drek the internet kiddies come up with where they say it's only a fetish or only if you have an animal spirit or only if you call yourself one. People need to get over their irrational fear and hatred of Furry fans. Self-loathing is a terrible thing.
