It's a pretty name, but it does stand out, especially if OP isn't Asian. People are going to ask about it, and what's the poor kid going to say? "Yeah, my mom was really into this comic at the time..."

And then they're going to ask, "What comic?"

It's not like it's going to be yanked off the web after the story ends. People can still look it up. And no matter how much you love Homestuck, you have to admit it's not exactly, uh, mainstream-friendly? If anyone at the kid's school finds out she's named after an ugly, bobble-headed goth troll in a badly-drawn pixel art series about MMOs (and MMOs themselves are still considered too "nerdy" for a lot of people), they're going to make her life miserable.

(Yes, bullying someone for their name is stupid and wrong and going to happen anyway. If you disagree, either you've never been to public school or your name is John Smith or something.)

Haha uh-oh, you're getting dangerously close to starting off another MSPA art wank! I figure the kid doesn't have to tell anyone about their name's origins, I mean it does just sound Japanese so it's easy to get away with and in the extremely unlikely event that another child finds the comic and gets far enough into it to even discover that character, it's simple to pass off as a coincidence. It's not a great idea to name a kid for a fandom (though somehow naming your kids after famous people and literary characters is generally acceptable so whatever) but if you really want to, Kanaya is an okay name to pick.

And yeah I have never been to public school (not since I was like 10 anyway), how'd you know ;D

You seriously think your average middle school bully is going to take the time and effort to look up MSPA, which isn't even on the first page of google results for "Kanaya"? And you seriously think the kid would go around telling people they were named after a cartoon character?

Like I said, she's going to be asked, and I don't think it's fair to put the kid in the position of having to lie on a regular basis. (Not to mention, as a parent, do you really want your kid to get used to lying?)

My brother's named after the king of the dwarves from The Hobbit (Thorin) and no one ever asks him about his name. And he's never been bullied about his name; trust me, he's been bullied about other things, but his name has never been a part of any bullying experience. Clothing and weight? Yes. Being in the "smarter kids'" program? Yes. Name? Never.

Unless your name is Eunice, Bertha, or it rhymes/looks like it rhymes ("Sean Bean"), kids don't usually care that much about names. I've been in public school all my life and I can't recall one instance of a kid harassing someone because of their name--which, of course, doesn't mean it never happens, but it definitely isn't a sure thing.

yeah as someone who was bullied before let me tell you that the LAST thing people will make fun of is your name, beyond maybe a few stupid rhymes or something. That would require effort and creativity. :l

That... does not match up with my experience :| but still, the comments here make me feel a little less pessimistic. Maybe the kid will be lucky and wind up in a more laid-back school like yours.
