ITA. I don't see what Ron and Hermione have in common other than Harry. She and Viktor really seemed to click (who, at 15, writes someone a five-page letter unless they really like them?) whereas Heron was like, five books of arguing, one book of arguing and unrequited love, two thirds of a book of arguing and unrequited love and then a third of a book (less, even) of TRUE ROMANCE FOREVER

AGREE. THIS totally.

Ehh, kind of disagree. I don't have much opinion on HP shipping but I'm sure lots of people have written embarrassingly long letters to their teenage crushes without that resulting in ~true luv~ either. Not saying Hermione and Ron were a great pair either but it feels 'right' in fiction for main characters to end up together rather than with side-plot people.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-21 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, that's something of a characteristic of immature fiction--and no, I am not insulting JK Rowling in any way, shape, or form. The simple fact is that HP is young adult literature, and many the traits of books meant for older audiences--such as having the characters end up with people who made sense even if not directly involved--were absent.

And now I should mention that I didn't ship anything in HP; I've simply read a lot of books where the romance involved was either actually developed or appeared in the epilogue with main character/person irrelevant to plot.

Not to play devil's advocate, but you don't have to have loads in common with someone to hook up. And as anon pointed out, plenty of people wrote stupidly long letters to each other in high school.

[identity profile] wistrift.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I agree about the letter thing, yeah, it's not necessarily a sign of anything other than mutual attraction, I was just making the (badly worded) point that at least they have something to talk about. and Ron and Hermione didn't hook up, they got married. Maybe there was a lot of character development offscreen but considering that these are Harry's best friends in the world and all they seem to do is argue with each other, it just never made sense to me.

[identity profile] cheesechimp.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think you're exaggerating here. Ron and Hermione did hook up, and while they were married with an 11-year-old child in the epilogue, that was 19 years later. It's not as though they were immediately married the instant they kissed. More importantly, while you could argue that things like finding the Philosopher's Stone, researching the Chamber of Secrets, searching out Sirius, hanging out with the Order, participating in the DA, etc are all "connected through Harry" they are, in and of their own right activities that Hermione and Ron each put equal, and sometimes greater, effort into than Harry. Perhaps Ron didn't share Hermione's passion for studying, and Hermione had little interest in Quidditch but ultimately they knew the same people, help many of the same values, worked towards the same goals, and experienced the same things. Whether or not they are connected because of Harry, they are connected.

"Heron," eh?

Butthurt OTPer detected

[identity profile] wistrift.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
yeeeeeesssss I am a bitter Harmonian, obviously, that's why my entire comment was about how Hermione and Harry should have ended up together OH WAIT

I actually don't ship anything involving the trio except for H/D, I just used Heron because I'm sick and writing out Hermione and Ron seemed unnecessary considering there is a smush name available

[identity profile] wistrift.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
oh wait never mind. I do ship Hermione/Ginny

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. I say. It's me.
