I LOVED Viktor/Hermione, and the idea of the Quidditch hotshot taking notice of the nerdy bookworm was cute.

Then the seventh book came out and Krum made those douchey comments at Bill and Fleur's wedding and dashed my little ship. :(

I've always been a little bitter that the series ended with more conventional pairings :( :( Harry/Ginny and Ron/Hermione was so obvious and we all knew it was coming.

I think the entirety of book seven was J.K. going 'how can I dash a small part of fandom's hopes and dreams?' with each and every page.

I really would have preferred "ROCKS FALL. EVERYONE DIES".

[identity profile] despatch-boxing.livejournal.com 2010-10-21 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
On the other hand, Ron never made douchey comments at allllll.

[identity profile] pelespen.livejournal.com 2010-10-21 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. Viktor making comments about all the pretty girls being taken, as opposed to Ron slobbering all over Lavender half to spite Hermione because she snogged Viktor.

At the same time, yeah - Ron/Hermione was painfully obvious from book 1. What can I say. JKR just kind of sucks at romance.

To be fair, I always got the sense that Hermione was trying to make Ron jealous (or at least get him to notice her as something other than "just a friend") when she went out with Viktor. At the very least, she was enjoying the fact that she made Ron jealous, so I don't see what Ron did as being any worse, really

[identity profile] pelespen.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, maybe, but like someone else said, if she was trying to make Ron jealous, why would she hide the fact that she was going out with Viktor? Cormac I can see, but she seemed to be pretty shy about her "relationship" with Viktor.

Either way, I still maintain JK just is kind of lousy at writing romance. Which is fine - they weren't romance novels.

Well, she knew everyone would find out at the Yule Ball anyway. Maybe she wanted it to really hit home since he was blabbing about no girls being available when she was right there the whole time?

[identity profile] pelespen.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Grrr. Served him right, now that I think back on it. Sorry, been a while and that brought back the memories ;)

[identity profile] wild-euphoria.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I never liked Ron/Hermione (or even Ron himself) that much in the first place, haha so it never really mattered to me that much.

[identity profile] dancingcarrot21.livejournal.com 2010-10-21 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have my book with me so I can't quote the exact words Krum said. But I remember he just asked Harry if Ginny was taken because he thought she looked pretty. Krum wasn't dating Hermione at the time, so he had no obligation to have eyes only on her.

To each his or her own, but I don't really get why it was a douchey comment. I:

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2010-10-21 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
He says something like "What's the point of being an international Quidditch player if all the good-looking girls are taken?" but I took it more as a joke than anything else - he was already irritated because of Luna's dad wearing Grindelwald's symbol to the wedding etc. And he was interested in Hermione because she wasn't like the other girls in GOF and because she was smart/etc so I don't think he's just a womanizing douche. idk, I think that line gets taken a bit too seriously.

[identity profile] dancingcarrot21.livejournal.com 2010-10-21 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same here. I just didn't see the big deal in it. I thought he was joking, too.

[identity profile] sherrilina.livejournal.com 2010-10-21 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
But the thing is, LOTS of the characters became OOC and douchier later on for no apparent reason (like Harry going from being horrified at his father's behavior in the memory in OOTP to emulating it one book later), so even if he wasn't a womanizing douche then, he seemed to appear like one now--even if it was a joke, to me it was one in poor taste, and still OOC for the shy and reticent, reluctant star we knew before who didn't seem to take much notice of good-looking girls anyway). It kind of takes away from his character, for me....plus it seemed like JK just finding another vessel to sing praises of how HAWT Ginny is, so that we're EXTRA EXTRA sure of this! *rolleyes*

(And hello again, lol!)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2010-10-21 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Ehhh I think we are just gonna wind up disagreeing on this one, since I don't really think the characters became OOC in later books or that Ginny was a Mary Sue etc. It maybe wasn't the nicest thing Krum's ever said, but I think he demonstrated often enough that he was a pretty good guy that I can brush aside the one remark as a joke (I did find it funny, anyway) and because he was already in a bad mood, due to Luna's dad wearing the wizard-equivalent of a swastika to a wedding.

[identity profile] wild-euphoria.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I think it's one of those things that will vary depending on each person's interpretation of it. I know I didn't take it as a joke - not saying that I started frothing at the mouth in offense and anger, or something - more of an annoyance, and I rolled my eyes going "...Oh." And then promptly forgot about in favour of the rest of the story.

Then again, I'm one of those people that would like to dismiss the last book almost entirely because certain character directions just rang so profoundly false (HI LUPIN).

[identity profile] sherrilina.livejournal.com 2010-10-21 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Krum said something like "What's the point of being a famous Quidditch star when the pretty girls always taken?"--which is rather against what we saw of him in the fourth book, where he seemed to be taking more notice of personality than looks, and certainly wasn't interested in taking advantage of his fame, or in people fawning over him!. So yeah, it did seem douchey and was one example of character assassination...

[identity profile] dancingcarrot21.livejournal.com 2010-10-21 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Like the person who commented to me before you, I agree with her that that line was meant to be a joke. Considering Krum has shown he loved Hermione for being different in GoF. But we can agree to disagree on this. It's not a big deal to me. :-/

[identity profile] sherrilina.livejournal.com 2010-10-21 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
But why say "if all the pretty girls are taken," as if looks matter so much? Sorry, but given how OOC JK made a lot of characters in later books, I don't think we can necessarily believe it was a joke just because of his past behavior, and even if it was it was in poor taste and still doesn't jibe with his previous personality at all. (It seemed more like another of JK's Mary Suish "have a guy comment on how HAWT Ginny is" touches...).

But we can agree to disagree! ;)

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
These are my thoughts! At least, that last bit especially. By book six, I loathed Hermione, and I never could stand Hermione and Ron (Hr/V, Hr/F, Hr/P...I liked those okay for what they could've potentially brought to each characters, instead of Hermione and Ron bringing out the worst in each other). But what I hated most about the pairing was how disgustingly predictable it was. Just once, I'd love to see a book or a show shake up my expectations for who will end up with whom.
