Was just wondering, after all the discussion of the majority of FS being female -- what exactly is the ratio?

HAHA I don't think anyone's surprised, this was more of "how big is the difference in numbers" and not "is there one"

i guess i just need to be more observent. i just kind of asume a 50/50 split. o.o

If you go to gaming forums (like I dunno, the forums for WoW), guys tend to be the overwhelming majority -- LJ tends to be the opposite (overall, not just on FS or even in fandom). It's pretty interesting to see the differences...

And in places like TV Tropes - 'cos who can't mention the other sinkhole of the internet? - I think it's something like 55% male, 45% female.

I wonder what the ratio on Facebook is. Probably close to 50/50 too? Same with Wikipedia? Non-geek areas in general tend to be more evenly divided, it's weird...

it's pretty true, though i sometimes think most of your mainstream *chans are roughly equal. that's not counting stuff like 7chan or TF2chan though.

To be honest I like the female-majority places better. Good christ there is a limit on how many casual sexist/misogynist/racist/rape jokes I can stand before telling everyone off and ragequitting HAHA

It would be really interesting to do a proper academic study comparing the styles of communication in majority female and majority male geek!spaces, I think.

As someone who spends most of his time on male-dominated places (and is a male himself) it's SO FUCKING REFRESHING not to have to deal with casual misogyny and racism and rape jokes and all this hateful, petty, mean bullshit all the time. Oh my god it gets so FRUSTRATING.

unfortunately i kind of like the kinds of discussions and the attitude of male-oriented sites better in other ways. why can't we just bring those two hands together. and then kick out all the stupid people. welp, laters.

The problem is even if you spoke up there are SO MANY OF THEM like in MMOs there are LITERALLY TENS OF THOUSANDS so it wouldn't do anything. They'd probably just do it more. It's not like telling someone IRL to quit it, face to face...

It surprises me that that could be a shock to people, too. I always assume the people I talk to on LJ are female and I'm rarely ever wrong, and most of the time when I'm wrong it fits more into the third option than "male."

I don't think it's a bad thing to assume they're female unless they tell you otherwise, it makes sense since a giant majority of the people on LJ ARE female. If you meet someone in an MMO, you're probably gonna assume they're male unless they tell you otherwise, right?

...or at least I do those HAHA sometimes I'm reading through FS comments and someone mentions they're a guy and I'm all WHAT REALLY... I would not have guessed/noticed unless they mentioned it

i kinda like not telling anyone my gender and see what conclusion they draw...
