I've always loved her.

[identity profile] tasogare-n-hime.livejournal.com 2010-11-02 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh great, are we going to have Musical VS Book wank now?

[identity profile] ivymutant.livejournal.com 2010-11-02 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Possibly, if I could be bothered to read the book. Way frikkin too long for me right now (and from what I've heard, too much of that is unrelated flaffle).

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2010-11-03 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
That's true. Half of the book is unrelated flaffle. The first few chapters are about how awesome the priest is, who does something and doesn't show up for the rest of the book. The first chapter of the second part is background stories of characters who all die a few chapters later. I mean, Monsieur Hugo, WTH!!!

Don't ask me why I read the entire thing. It wasn't for a school assignment. I did it entirely of my free will.

Me too. But I kind of love it for that. We no longer have books where in the middle of action the author is suddenly like, "And now, let's talk about the Battle of Waterloo, which happened before this story started..."

My memory of Marius/Eponine in the book was that he was so uninterested in her the only reason he even noticed she'd died saving his life was that he nearly tripped over her.

Am I one of few/only Les Miz/Eponnine fans to not mind her dying/not hooking up with Marius/liked her character arc etc? Her ending up with Marius would not have worked or been good for either of them.

[identity profile] missing-mile-15.livejournal.com 2010-11-02 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't remember the play very well, but in the book he barely acknowledges her existence. I don't think ending up together would have been very in character (considering Marius is all over Cosette as well, in both versions).

[identity profile] illittorate.livejournal.com 2010-11-02 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I like that font.

Anyway... no. I really can't see it. I don't like either of them all that much, but they barely interact and Eponine's thing for him is hopeless because they're from different ends of the social spectrum. Ship away, but the claim that it'd make sense for them to end up together is silly.

No because book and now I stop to think about it I kinda ship her with Cosette, partly for the epic fuckedupness value. Please tell me there is fic of this somewhere.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-03 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
If OP ships them in the musical, how does book!Eponine come into how plausible the pairing is?

... Eponine/Cosette would be pretty interesting though.

[identity profile] box-life.livejournal.com 2010-11-02 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Marius was so oblivious to her that I really can't agree, but it's nice to see a Les Mis secret anyway.

[identity profile] nighean-ruadh.livejournal.com 2010-11-02 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. Besides the fact that it'd kinda void a significant part of the point of the story, it'd never work out happily.

Eponine has an epic level of crush on him, but she knows nothing of him. It's shallow attraction; with the poverty she's lived in for as long as she can remember, the allure of this sophisticated, educated student is undeniable. It's essentially escapism; just as shown in 'On My Own', it's better to live in that fantasy than her reality with Patron-Minette, her father's gang.

As for Marius, he has no respect or real feeling for her. If you look at the book, 'A Little Fall of Rain' is hugely different; Marius doesn't care about Eponine in the slightest, he's just prepared to die and thinking that giving in to Eponine's begging him to stay with her will repay his family's debt to Thenardier. Even in the musical, you have to admit the sentiment on Marius' part is out of place; he's never shown more to Eponine than base 'friendship' (even then, mostly to his own benefit) and, after she's dead, it has left no lasting impression on him specifically. She's the first to die, something that affects the others at the barricade more than Marius, who called himself her friend. Just look at 'Drink with Me'; he's already angsting about Cosette while everyone else mourns and comes to term with the chance that they will die.

Marius and Cosette aren't much better (before you cry butthurt shipper). She's been isolated all her life, never really knowing a man bar her father, while still being exposed to romantic notions; considering that, isn't it likely that her 'first' love would seem true since she's never experienced anything similar before? Meanwhile, Marius sees her as nothing but a doll, a prize to be won; he falls in 'love at first sight', despite knowing nothing about her, stalks her and refuses to stop his pursuit of her. It's far more likely the same ideal of worthless 'courtly love' that plagues Romeo.

I love Eponine as a character, but (and, in the musical, she admits it herself) she and Marius had no chance of developing a relationship. It's her goodness that means she dies, really; she deserves better but has no chance of getting it.

In conclusion, is it just me, or is Les Mis a really, really bad place for romance?

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2010-11-03 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Meanwhile, Marius sees her as nothing but a doll, a prize to be won; he falls in 'love at first sight', despite knowing nothing about her, stalks her and refuses to stop his pursuit of her.

I'm glad you mentioned this. Their romance in the book is described by nothing but a handful of walks in the park ogling each other. It's mostly in Marius' head who makes assumptions about who she is, and what she's like and essentially creates this fantasy persona out of her (which ridiculously comes true because, well, his imagination isn't anything beyond "Upright girl with a big heart and a face like a doll.")

If the book was written this century I'm sure the romance would have been much more engaging. Cosette most definitely would have had a more active role in the story, perhaps joined the fight so that Eponnine wouldn't have seemed like such a stronger and more likable female character.

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2010-11-02 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah. The crush I loved, but it can't be a real relationship.

That said, I saw a production in London awhile back that totally made me ship her and Grantaire. In a quiet, well-why-not sort of relationship. Just sayin'.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-03 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Not to sound stupid or anything, but what version/production is this?

[identity profile] mo-anam.livejournal.com 2010-11-03 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
I think it may be Broadway closing cast- I am almost certain that is Diana Kaarina as Eponine. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's her.

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2010-11-03 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I've always preferred Eponnine's active, spirited role over demure, behind-the-scenes Cosette. What was the point of Cosette anyway? She doing needle work and thinking "What a beautiful day!" while people (including her father and lover) were fighting on the streets and getting killed. At least Eponnine was relevant to the plot even if she died in the cliche way most heroic women did in the literature of that era.

I was positively ecstatic when I saw them giving her a bigger role in the musical.

Look, I like musical-Eponine too (and yes, I've read the book, and liked it, and don't now hate the musical), but I don't really think that's a sensible ending at all, much less the only one.

Besides, Marius isn't much of a prize, in my opinion. At least, I find him and Cosette to be the least interesting characters in either canon,

[identity profile] whoseheartbreak.livejournal.com 2010-11-03 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
plus it's implied that Eponine and Montparnasse might have a weird friends-with-benefits type thing... in the book. in the production I've seen, Eponine always seems vaguely irritated by him. Poor Montparnasse.

that said, yay Les Mis secret!
