I sometimes feel this way about characters who ID as bisexual, but I honestly hold out hope that someone out there is capable of getting it right, and I mostly dgaf because 90% of everything sucks anyway I can write about it myself if I want to.

I used to feel like this, but nowadays I'm just desperate for any representation whatsoever. Anything. Just so that people won't think I'm weird for being bisexual. I feel like if there were more characters who actually identified as bisexual, there would be less confusion over it and I wouldn't have to freaking explain to almost every person I meet.

Wow, really? I'm sorry :(

I'm not from the US and maybe it's just my region or whatever, but I've never encountered someone who thought bad about bisexuals.
Homosexuals? Yes. Transgendered? Yes. But bi? People seem to find it not as "threatening" as the other two. It goes a little bit like: "As long as you're also shagging the opposite gender I don't care. But please on't hit on me lol".

I identify as bi. Granted, people who don't know me give me weird looks when they see me with a girl. But once they get to know me they're all okay with it. Never heard any negative comments.
Maybe that's just me.

I found out a few years ago that my mother-in-law thought that me being bi meant I wasn't monogamous. It's not like that idea magically appeared in her head - the media gave it to her.

What I experience more often is the either/or thing - people telling me I'm really a lesbian and ignoring me when I correct them, or people saying I can't possibly be a real queer because I date guys; there was that one secret last week telling people that we aren't really really bisexual, we're just conditioned to be oh I dont even know - that kinda thing happens IRL a lot too. Your basic erasure package. To be fair, I don't understand monosexuals either.

Well, consider yourself lucky :D I don't live in a homophobic area; I live in Europe and everyone I know is fine with gay people, and even so I've had a lot of negative comments. I think one of the worst things is that hardly anyone realizes that what they're saying is making me sad, and part of the problem is that bisexuals are so invisible in popular media that people don't know crap about us.

I've had "It's just a phase!"-comments, "All bisexuals are sluts!"-comments, "So you're saying you have one of each?"-comments, "But you're not actually going to be serious with a woman, right?"-comments, "You're just doing it for the attention!"-comments, "That's hot. Can I watch?"-comments and "I'm just upset that I won't have any grandkids!"-comments. (That last one being from my mum, lol. I think she just confused bisexuality with homosexuality and also forgot about alternative ways to have children, but whatever.)

So, yeah, I've never been bashed or had comments like "God hates bisexuals!" (which would be weird in my country, since it's super secular) and most people I know and meet are awesome about it, but sadly I have had some negative comments. ...I hope this comment doesn't sound too whiny D: I'm not unhappy with my situation or anything! I just really want to see some bisexual representation on TV, to normalize my orientation a little.

IAWTC - my main fandom is Metal Gear and while several of the characters are functionally bisexual (as in, definitely having sexual relationships with people of both genders), I can only think of one who actively IDs as bi, and most are evil sadists (...that said, most Metal Gear characters are evil sadists, period).

Unless you're very direct about it I think bisexuality might be a little challenging to handle. I remember having a conversation about this on FS once before - someone posted a Torchwood secret saying that they thought it was a shame that, in a montage of 'queer TV moments' or whatever (not my fandom, haven't seen it), there was no inclusion of Captain Jack's relationships with women; he's bisexual, but to include him in a queer montage he had to be narrowed down to 'gay'. That is not how it works. ANYWAY yeah, to show a character as bi they often need to spell it out through either words or actions - the latter usually leads to the stereotype about bi people being incapable of monogamy, and the former is a place some pussyfoot writers aren't willing to go. (ie, admitting that people still experience random attraction when they're in a relationship with someone, or HAVING CHARACTERS ACTUALLY TALK ABOUT QUEER IDENTITIES oh noes how could they.)

Yeah, I agree that unless a character outright states that they're bisexual it's hard to show it. I just really, really want a character that openly and proudly identifies as bisexual ;____; That would be amazing. But I guess I'll make do with the headcanon that I have for various characters for now. (For example, Lily from HIMYM and Dean from Supernatural = totally pinging my bisexual gaydar.)

- Thirteen on House (gets mentioned in a handful of episodes)
- Oscar on renegadepress.com (couple year old Canadian show like Degrassi set in Saskatchewan)

Not to mention the actual Degrassi has Paige, who has a really great coming out storyline and a gorgeous (lesbian) girlfriend, both of whom are well developed characters (and one of my OTPs ^^).

Good point. I was meh about Paige's character but I do think her character and story line was well developed.
