I gotta know what minority this is.

p.s. Are you talking American media here? Because "the media" is very different depending where you are.

I am in Asia.

That was my guess, too. My husband is of Cherokee descent and hates at least 90% of American Indian (his preferred term) characters in mainstream media. Although I think he liked the one cop guy from [i]Twin Peaks.[/i]

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
just fyi you don't speak for everyone in your specific demographic

(Anonymous) 2010-11-06 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
The secret was written in first person. I did not imply I was speaking for anybody but myself.

I sometimes feel this way about characters who ID as bisexual, but I honestly hold out hope that someone out there is capable of getting it right, and I mostly dgaf because 90% of everything sucks anyway I can write about it myself if I want to.

[identity profile] pigeonswerver.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to feel like this, but nowadays I'm just desperate for any representation whatsoever. Anything. Just so that people won't think I'm weird for being bisexual. I feel like if there were more characters who actually identified as bisexual, there would be less confusion over it and I wouldn't have to freaking explain to almost every person I meet.

Aha, sounds like me!

I felt so embarassed by the portrayal of Arabs in Black Jack 21 despite loving the stuffing out of that series.

It didn't diminish my enjoyment of the overall series, but I could've done without that... it's kind of funny, since the anime avoids the more exaggerated black character designs that the manga sometimes had (due to Tezuka being inspired by black and white American cartoons of his era), but brought those plane hijackin terrorists in, however sympathetic their cause might have been...

(Anonymous) 2010-11-05 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe if Arabs stopped hijacking planes and blowing things up, people would stop portraying them that way in stories.

Don't people also quite legitimately complain when a fandom that could be including minority characters leaves them out?

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I realize that you most likely declined to state what minority you are for a good reason, but I'm curious to know what it is. I know it's not your job to teach any of us what is appropriate and what is offensive, but at least knowing which minority you're referring to would be nice, at least then I could go out and educate myself and find out what media representations are troublesome and how to Not Do It Wrong.

Just telling other people to "not even bother" writing characters of your particular minority is not pro-active, and like [livejournal.com profile] dethtoll pointed out, you don't speak for an entire group of people.

Cry moar. As previously stated, you don't speak for everyone. If the problem is too many orientation or racial stereotypes, then how about discussing what you think writers are getting wrong so people can try to improve their media?

If your minority is pretty much non-existent in the media, there's going to be some screw-ups in characterization for the few examples there are. A rough start can still lead to some good improvement and better portrayal of future examples.

:O Oh, oh! Well!! Aren't YOU a special snowflake!

(Anonymous) 2010-11-05 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Mhhh, are the background colors a hint or am I just seeing things?

(Anonymous) 2010-11-05 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
i am, to put it mildly, sympathetic, even though - if the colours are a clue - we aren't talking about the same minority. one can only tolerate so many boots to the face, as it were. it's just so tiring.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-05 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
If the colours are a clue, watch things that aren't from the US, read books, and read comics (yes seriously). That's where I've found the most positive portrayals, anyway. Also I hope you're not just holding those characters to a much higher standard than other ones.

[identity profile] melengro.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I'm curious. What do the background colours (possibly) represent? I don't believe I'm familiar with that combination or pattern.

One might have to know what minority this is to comment on the portrayal.

I'm gonna guess you're transgender?

If that's the case, then yeah, I get why you'd feel that way. Cis people can't write trans people for shit.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-06 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
I assume by the rainbows that you are gay. I'm not gay myself, but yeah, I have to agree with you. I think media is getting there but still has a long way to go. eg, I love Kurt from Glee but I still think he's stereotypical queenie gay iykwim.

*thinks*

What about the gay character in Brothers and Sisters?

[identity profile] tee-sama.livejournal.com 2010-11-06 09:42 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I thought about Russians/slavic people first. In american media we're usually the bad guys. :D

But it's probably about LGBT judging by the background.

[identity profile] keyspitter.livejournal.com 2010-11-06 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like Arabs but perhaps I'm mistaken. I can't even watch most Hollywood entertainment without taking a cursory check that they're not going to portray us as: terrorists/rapists/slavedrivers/fantatics/slaves. The list goes on.

It's especially disheartening when you get it unexpectedly in books as that is my main entertainment forte. Oh well, I guess it's our own fault for not producing enough of our own media and self-portrayals by ourselves. I can't really depend on foreigners to get it right, can I.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-07 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe I'm just cynical, but I don't believe this is a real member of a minority expressing their real opinion. I think this is either a pure troll or a member of the majority with an agenda, and either way they're hoping people will read this and throw up their hands and say "Wait, they want the media to not represent them?? I give up! Obviously there's nothing I can do to make minorities happy and I should just give up trying!"
