I kind of envy people who can turn their brains off and watch stuff "for entertainment", cause I can't anymore. :/

(Anonymous) 2010-11-14 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, are you studying the humanities by any chance? :P I'm an english lit & sociology major and I can't freaking watch anything without seeing heteronormative discourses all over the place.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-14 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Not the original anon, but yeah, I hear that. History, with some Soc and Anthro and I can't stop looking at things without seeing rather uncomfortable implications everywhere.

Not the original anon, and not to be weird, but reading too much Jezebel (too poor for grad school!) has kind of ruined my simple-minded enjoyment of anything.

I really kinda miss it.

Not the OP, but I'm taking those same classes and I know what you mean. =/

(OP of thread)

haha YES!! English major here, although I'm fascinated by women's studies and the like and probably would've gone into that if my college had had that program. I overanalyze everything now, it's ridiculous. :P

+1

English and Visual Arts double major here. I find joy in analyzing everything. This usually ends terribly due to my taste in anime, but I've actually gotten into some interesting conversations because of it, so.

I did. Both English and history. And to make matters worse, not only was Young Adult Lit one of my specializations, but I spent quite a bit of time studying both fairy tales and mythology as well. I just can't turn it off anymore. I quit trying long ago with anything involving Harry Potter (or any YA Lit, really) or superhero comics. And as much as I love the show, mythological inconsistencies in Supernatural bother me to the point that my husband has refused to watch with me anymore because he says that I complain too much. Oddly enough, Transformers seems to be the only one of my fandoms that I don't over-analyze.

Don't worry, in 20 years it'll be easier. You'll have done the "critical eye" thing for so long that you'll be able to switch your degree on and off at will. ;-)

I think I understand what you're saying with this post... but the way you wrote that sounds SO pretentious, LOL! Like, all the people watching TV "for entertainment" are feeble-minded simpletons, but YOU on the other hand are watching TV for the greater good. You alone can save us all with your psych-101 interpretations of popular television shows.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-15 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think she sounds pretentious at all, how else was she supposed to say it? Anon is a little touchy...
