I agree completely! I've never watched Glee because I thought it was a forward-thinking, well-written TV show; I watch it because it's fun and makes me laugh. If I take it seriously, it's ridiculous and I can't enjoy it. Why is it bad to like things just because they're fun?

[identity profile] lovedforaday.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Glee got a million times better for me when I stopped thinking about it too hard. There are some things that move me, some things that make me laugh, but mostly I think of Glee as mindless entertainment.

I still think Mercedes needs a storyline, though.

[identity profile] dullscythe.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, she does. Hoping for more Mercedes this season, too.

I kind of envy people who can turn their brains off and watch stuff "for entertainment", cause I can't anymore. :/

(Anonymous) 2010-11-14 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, are you studying the humanities by any chance? :P I'm an english lit & sociology major and I can't freaking watch anything without seeing heteronormative discourses all over the place.

Don't worry, in 20 years it'll be easier. You'll have done the "critical eye" thing for so long that you'll be able to switch your degree on and off at will. ;-)

(Anonymous) 2010-11-15 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
I think I understand what you're saying with this post... but the way you wrote that sounds SO pretentious, LOL! Like, all the people watching TV "for entertainment" are feeble-minded simpletons, but YOU on the other hand are watching TV for the greater good. You alone can save us all with your psych-101 interpretations of popular television shows.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-14 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
But the problem is that the show casts itself as socially aware. When they address race/gender/disability/sexuality issues, they're naturally asking for people to consider those issues and talk about them. The show is making a statement whether they mean to or not. I think it started off as a spoof of an after-school special, so they could make those "issue" episodes and still not be taken completely seriously. But it's kind of evolved past that.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-14 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree.

When you bring up hot topics such as these, it's for a reason. You want to stir things up and get people thinking. That's what keeps them watching and coming back for more.

They need to realize not everyone is going to be happy with what they put out there though. It may just be a tv show, but those sort of topics are serious and a lot more than an after school special hour.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-14 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. The show's got a lot of ~serious moments~ about various issues - homosexuality, religion, bullying to name a few - and while the tone of the show is usually sarcastic and fun, during those moments the show really is asking its audience to take it seriously. That's what bothers me when they send a completely botched message across.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
So no comedy ever before has had Serious Themes tossed into the middle of all the wackiness. That's odd, because I remember "Three's Company" being about the silliest show on TV, and it had all kinds of serious moments here and there. Some were even social awareness.

OP

(Anonymous) 2010-11-14 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Thought I should clarify the S!B at the bottom because it ended up being kind of hard to read. It says:

S!B anon can't get this out loud without getting "OMG teenagers are stupid and mindlessly do whatever they see on TV, every character must be perfect all the time." UGH.

In retrospect, I should have made that text black (*-_-)

(Anonymous) 2010-11-14 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe they were confused because comedies are supposed to be funny.

ehhh but like anon said, sometimes glee does seem to take itself rather seriously when it purposely brings up serious subjects. personally? the religion episode pissed me off beyond belief. i don't like to say this a lot, but hsuaghuguk NOTHINGEXISTSINAVACUUM :/

I'm pretty sure it's meant to be both, dude. Some episodes are OBVIOUSLY topical/have a point/want you to think about something, but most are just cracked-out and silly. That's why I like it. (And for the songs too :D though I have to sing along so I can't hear the autotune, sometimes. Most of their music choices are pretty sweet, at least!)

[identity profile] doxorz.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I can watch it for the lulz OP, but once the show asks me to start taking it seriously, I begin to do so.

And trust me, its much better when it's just being lulzy.

I wish Glee could choose how they want to present themselves. This constant back and forth switch is driving me nuts because I am going back in forth between hating and enjoying it.

It's certainly preachy for a "silly comedy."

I feel like each episode of Glee basically gives you a subject to have a totally unrelated discussion about. I mean, I never feel like the ep has handled a subject in any really graceful way but it always throws out stuff to talk about, usually starting with people saying OMG THEY HANDLED THAT SO TERRIBLY!

[identity profile] sunni-sideup.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
The writers perpetuate the idea that Glee is serious, though. That's the only thing. The show itself sends mixed signals, which is why I am completely frustrated with it.

[identity profile] angathol.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
The show does make statements about various issues, though; often they'll be so blatantly shoehorned into an episode that it just feels like they're soapboxing about topics that aren't even terribly relevant to the scene. I felt really awkward watching an episode a few weeks back; they threw in some non-sequitur dialogue about sexist double-standards when it comes to vocally checking out the opposite sex, I think.

[identity profile] missing-mile-15.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Glee can't make up its mind on what it wants to be, which is why I kind of want to throw a shoe at it sometimes. It has some of the worst continuity I've seen on a show, which I could take if it played itself off as a silly comedy. The trouble is that it wants you to take it seriously at points, which makes almost everything absurd.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-15 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Glee isn't inconsistent; it's postmodern.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-15 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
This show is so fucking retarded and it shits on goods songs with their lousy ass covers. I wished this show would die...but oh no, the Gleetards will keep it going.
