But the problem is that the show casts itself as socially aware. When they address race/gender/disability/sexuality issues, they're naturally asking for people to consider those issues and talk about them. The show is making a statement whether they mean to or not. I think it started off as a spoof of an after-school special, so they could make those "issue" episodes and still not be taken completely seriously. But it's kind of evolved past that.

I agree.

When you bring up hot topics such as these, it's for a reason. You want to stir things up and get people thinking. That's what keeps them watching and coming back for more.

They need to realize not everyone is going to be happy with what they put out there though. It may just be a tv show, but those sort of topics are serious and a lot more than an after school special hour.

Yeah, I mean, we all know that Ryan Murphy didn't bring up gay bullying in the last episode as "lolz omg too funny." That was a serious issue and handed seriously. But I think they need to decide what kind of show they want to be on that front. Also, issues can't be handled in one episode and then just forgotten.

Exactly. The show's got a lot of ~serious moments~ about various issues - homosexuality, religion, bullying to name a few - and while the tone of the show is usually sarcastic and fun, during those moments the show really is asking its audience to take it seriously. That's what bothers me when they send a completely botched message across.

So no comedy ever before has had Serious Themes tossed into the middle of all the wackiness. That's odd, because I remember "Three's Company" being about the silliest show on TV, and it had all kinds of serious moments here and there. Some were even social awareness.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-15 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and in those moments "Three's Company" probably wanted people to take them seriously (or at least with a bit of seriousness), not write them off as some dumb comedy that can never make social statements.

I'm pretty sure the writers simply realized that comedy goes down a lot better if you care about the individual characters with a little bit of pathos instead of seeing them 100 percent of the time as jesters. I'm not sure they were aiming particularly for Social Justice League entry.
