Hey, as long as you're not posting it anywhere or claiming it's a glorious piece of should-be-canon work, have fun with it, OP.

I almost asked "ARE YOU ME?" but A) mine is nowhere near that long, and B) you're doing the SMART THING and not posting it.

But I'm actually really curious what fandom because it sounds like it's right up my alley. I love "nothing happen in this story!" stories. Love. I could read volumes of things that just sit there and ramble about the weather.

Then boom. You're not wasting your time. Live your life for you, OP -- do what makes you happy. So long as you're doing that, you're doing it right.

Funny enough I just read a few fics where there was development and I was pretty bored. Give me a shallow simple story with my kinks any day. I mean some plots are done well but sometimes I just really want something that will make me feel warm and fuzzy and the plot doesn't work for me.

I love that idea! I've kinda been doing that too, although it's mostly in my head. >____> I like it! You know, it's exciting!

OMG. Are you me? Well okay my own fanfic isn't AU, but damn, I hear ya! I have mine at about 50k words and it's never going to be shown to anyone (well okay, 1 person), but hocrap is it fun!

Nothing wrong with this, OP! I'm doing NaNo and my plot is basically "Take the Firefly characters, throw some other Whedonverse people in with them and see what happens!" It's kind of terrible and I'm having a fabulous time. :)

I'm writing a story where House (yes, MD) becomes a half-cat, half-human, and then various shenanigans happen, and I'm pretty sure there's going to be a big, dramatic battle at the end, with lots of explosions and gunfights...and "HAVE SEX OR DIE!!!". *hangs head*
I'm pretty sure that if I ever posted it, someone would track me down and kill me.
But, you gotta do what you love! It's not for them, it's for ME. ALLL MINE.

If it is making you happy, then it is not a waste of time. Period. I have my own fanfic that I write for my own personal reason. Never gonna share it, never. But I'm happy when I write it, I'm convinced that I'm a better writer because of it, and I like getting all of these plotbunnies out of my head and onto a screen.

See, now this is obviously where I've been going wrong.

I've written loads of stuff, but I've started to post some of it and somehow the fun has gone out of it. I think I'll finish posting the stuff I've started and keep the rest to myself, then I won't have to worry about whether people will like it or hate it.

I wrote this horrible 60 page epic with no signs of being finished saga of OOC teenaged angst (fic for Generation X (comic book)) when I was 15 and it was the best writing experience EVAR. I had no expectations, no intention whatsoever of posting it, and I could do whatever my wee angsty heart desired without shame. I wish desperately that I could re-create that feeling, instead of letting my standards and ego get in the way. :\

OP, why don't you just make a second account and post it to the pit or something? Trust me, your self-indulgence would probably be appreciated more than you might anticipate.

My first fic in my current fandom was similarly self-indulgent. It was wanky, OOC, and touched every angsty hot button issue that I secretly get off on. It scored off the charts on the Mary Sue litmus test. I was old enough to know it was crap but didn't care--I published it anyway ... and got glowing reviews in certain circles. (Turns out other people like shameless sentimental crap as much as I do.) After I got more situated in the fandom, I decided to distance myself and abandoned the account.

I eventually reinvented myself as a more "respectable" writer in the fandom, but no other writing experience comes close to that one. And in some sense I think that's what fanfic should be about: just writing whatever turns you on. I don't know why fanfiction turned so serious. Really, what the hell.
