I'm with you there, I don't get Schweinsteiger/Gomez either. But then again, neither do I get Schweinski, not back then, not now, not ever. I feel very lonely in this fandom.

Actually, Schweinsteiger/Lahm sounds like a cool pairing.
Back when I was in the fandom, Lahm was mostly paired with Hildebrandt (Limo or so it was called) - which didn't really warm me up for Lahm at all.

Schweinski, however, was the most famous one. It just... existed. It didn't bother me at all but I wasn't interested in it either.

I know, somehow I never got into these two "big" pairings (Schweinski and Lahm/Hildebrandt). But I do love le grand more than is healthy. ;)

Schweinsteiger/Lahm just makes way more sense to me than any other pairing including either of them. I don't mind Schweinski, I just have no interest in anything other than their apparently awesome friendship. Not hating on anyone, just feeling like a sad minority. ;)

The way I understand the OP I doubt that would work for them, if they don't just want the boys to LOOK the way they look now, but rather want fic that is set in the present, dealing with stuff that happened recently. At least that's how I understood the secret.

Awww I've always liked both of them, especially their friendship. I'm not really into shipping (I don't "OMG*squee*" over photos of the guys together, I don't write or read fics much at all, etc.) but I can see what you're saying.

I think back then they both were relatively good friends but then people began joking that they were in the closet together so shortly after the WC they kept telling people that they weren't really friends but just had fun together in the NT games. And since then they've really underplayed their friendship. I do like the idea of them just being less "OMG We're loooovvveeerrrss LOL!!!" like back in the day. I kind of almost see it like Katie and Hubbell in "The Way We Were" (LOL I watched it a few weeks back).

I do football "shipping" really wrong, I know.
