There'll always be people who think they're a better fan than you. It's just like with religion, you'll have the same god, the same beliefs and all the little factions going "I think you'll find we're the real fans."
At the end of the day, it doesn't matter. There isn't an objective standard of belief or devotion, so all people can do is get high on their own smugness.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-26 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you ever comment on things you actually know about? Or are you just addicted to the knee-jerk reaction without context?

[identity profile] dar-actually.livejournal.com 2010-11-26 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
And how would you know what I know about, if I don't present a detailed list of my *~learnings~* for you to look over and say "Right, you can talk about this, this and this but not that."
I'll just keep having thoughts all the same. ...If that's alright with you, oh wise and powerful anonymous person on the internet.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-26 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Well you clearly know nothing about football - you can talk about it all you want, obviously, but your thoughts are just as obviously pretty irrelevant, so why bother?

[identity profile] dar-actually.livejournal.com 2010-11-26 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
So why bother talking to me about the subject if my thoughts on it are so irrelevant? It's your time to waste, I'm just curious as to why you would.
And I may not be into soccer*, but I know a thing or two about fandoms, followings and basic human behaviours. Like snobbery, which the OP was complaining about.

*Yes, soccer.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-26 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
And sports fans do not come into the category of fandom. Which is what the OP was really complaining about, and is where she/he's going wrong.

And yeah, I totally believe you know about snobbery. Football v soccer - you're really that petty? Yep, you are.

[identity profile] dar-actually.livejournal.com 2010-11-26 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
That's just, like, your opinion, man. If anything, sports are the original fandom.

Nope, not petty. I just like calling football soccer because I know it bothers people who get uppity about it :D

(Anonymous) 2010-11-26 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Sports clearly aren't the original fandom - that's the dumbest thing I've heard this week.

So you are just trolling. Then why the big upset reaction when someone calls you on it?

[identity profile] dar-actually.livejournal.com 2010-11-26 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? You're not a fandom, really? You follow a group because you're emotionally invested in their actions, their victories and losses. You watch them on the TV, you see them in person with thousands of others. You get their autographs, you buy the crappy merchandise, you talk about what you love and hate about it with your friends and you're NOT a fandom? I'd like to hear why, only you don't have much of a point to sell.

Please, try not to confuse a sagacious remark for an upset reaction. Not trolling, just talking. And asking questions that seem to annoy you by calling for thought on your part.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-27 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't say there wasn't a sports fandom. I said sports fandom wasn't the original fandom, which is what you alleged.

We obviously have very different ideas of fandom anyway. I'm a fan of a sports team, I go and watch them, I care about their successes, I talk to other people about them. What I don't do is write fic about them, make pic spams, stalk them, message the manager, etc. There's nothing wrong with doing that, but that's fandom - standing on the terrace every other week is being a fan.

Being a fan, and being in fandom are very different things. Some, although very, very few football fans do both. Complaining about the fact that the rest of the football community isn't supporting your slash is at best, unrealistic. At worst it's fuelling the crap some female supporters already get. Enjoy the game, keep your fucking fantasies online. How is that difficult?

[identity profile] dar-actually.livejournal.com 2010-11-27 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
So, you're a fan, but you're not in a fandom :)
Sounds to me that that the only reason sports aren't are fandom is because you just don't like the associations that the word "fandom" conjures up in your head. Which is really not an objective definition at all. By the way, a lot of people in fandoms aren't stalkers and spammers, and resent your stereotyping.

[identity profile] uncieloazul.livejournal.com 2010-11-26 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree and disagree with both of you.

1- Football *is* a fandom.
2- Who cares if she doesn't know anything about football? This kind of behaviour is in any fandom out there. Old fans vs. new fans, slash fangirls vs. het fangirls, fans of classic versions vs. fans of remakes... the list goes on and on. You don't need to know so much about sports to understand what OP is talking about.
3- IT'S FOOTBALL, NOT SOCCER.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-26 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

You don't need to know so much about sports to understand what OP is talking about.
True, but sports fandoms are still a bit different from other fandoms. The non-slashing majority of sports fans are still a big homophobic, anti-slash bunch that has trouble accepting any fans, especially female fans, who behave differently from the "traditional" fans.

[identity profile] uncieloazul.livejournal.com 2010-11-27 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I get what you mean. Not for nothing so many players have problems to come out... but listen, not everyone who is against the slash fangirls in football fandom do it because of homophobia. Some believe that they ~don't understand football~, that is, they don't know what supporting a team to death really means, etc, and just cheer for the hottest guy on the field, or any team where their OTP happens to play for. And that's just a couple of examples.

I'm quite like the OP - I've loved football since I was very little, but I am into slashing the players and all that, too. While I can understand where the rage at slash fangirls comes from, I wouldn't attack any of them. They are into this for the hotness, others for the game/team they have supported since they were in the craddle. Everything would be better if people just let others have fun in the way they want.

[identity profile] uncieloazul.livejournal.com 2010-11-27 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
ah ok, sorry about that! x_x

[identity profile] dar-actually.livejournal.com 2010-11-27 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
That's okay, I thought you were referring to OP.
...That's also the third time this week.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-26 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
You're hanging out in the wrong places.

If you want to talk about football, get off LJ and the slash comms and go to a real football comm. No-one'll give a shit if you're male or female if you know what you're talking about, and if it bothers you just don't tell them. That's where you have your chat about football.

The slash comms are where you have your chat about hot guys doing each other.

It's not rocket science.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-26 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I know enough football fans who know their stuff and whom I can talk to, it just annoys me that I have to watch carefully what I say around (some of) them, because the second I dare to imply in some tiny little subclause that some player looks good those so-called "real" football fans suddenly forget everything else I've said before and put me in the "stupid fangirl" category. Is it so weird that I don't want to hide/apologise for my other interests? That I, naively, wish for more football fans who care about the game but still like slash, or who at least don't mind if other people like it?

Seriously. o_O I'm not stupid. I know where to find what. I merely said that some fans are behaving like immature, stupid idiots, and it's rather difficult to stay out of their way.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-26 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, I really don't get this. When I was a teenager I couldn't even go to games because it was too dangerous. I can now happily watch footbal and it's great.

I don't actually slash footballers, although I'm a TV slasher, but the thought of someone happily chatting about their favourite footballers fucking each other, in the pub before the match, just fills me with horror. We're so far away from a premiership footballer coming out it's untrue, and there's a good reason that isn't going to happen. Even the FA in England have said it will take ten years for the anti homophobe campaign to start working.

I think what I'm trying to point out is football fandom is very far removed from the football fans. You have to realise that your RPF slash hobby is really disturbing to a lot of people, people who are just going to football matches.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-27 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
You make a good point, and I agree with you about the whole chatting about slash in a pub before the match thing. I'd never do that. But I generally don't talk about slash, even less so RPS, irl. I'm not some crazy fangirl who runs around chattering to everyone about her slash fantasies. I was only talking about online fandom.

But, first of all, even in LJ comms, where slashers aren't some strange sort of rarity, there are some wannabe "real" fans who bitch at slashers. In an environment where talking about RPS is usually not a big taboo. Especially when done tongue-in-cheek.
Second, even without mentioning slash and explicit guy-on-guy-sex, just talking about a player being hot even weirds out many football fans, online and irl. I get why RPS is not something you should talk about to just about anyone, and I don't, but just saying that some player is hot shit? Just like no guy would think twice about calling a hot sportswoman sexy?

I see your point about RPS. Obviously it's not something you can talk about to just everyone. But talking about a player's looks shouldn't be such a big deal.

[identity profile] cherrycoloured.livejournal.com 2010-11-27 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Replace "football" with "baseball" and I know how you feel exactly. I like slashing them and squeeing over attractive players but the sport always comes first, and I hate when people question my love for the sport, first and foremost.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-27 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
=[ That's why I don't really go deep in football fandom. I don't really slash, I don't really care much about the "hotness level" of the players, but I'm not really a "serious" fan who thinks all girls who like slash or are obsessed with certain players aren't legit fans. I can admit I became an avid fan of football because of the hot players I noticed and I did do a lot of slashing when I was younger, but now that I'm older....I just kind of would like to talk to people when a game is going on. Talk shit, make jokes, yell at the ref/players. But I also like talking about how hot certain players look every now and then. Dunno, you can't tweak fandom to your personal liking so I get your frustration, OP.
