Hm. I may have to catch up on this season now to see whether the same useless crap platitudes I got growing up are indeed still being passed on. (Grilled Cheezus really put me off wanting to subject myself to any more, but I could stand it to find out for sure.)

Actually, as someone who is both gay and a victim of bullying, I thought that this was handled fairly well(for Glee, anyway). Kurt tries everything that guidance counselors tell you to do: he confronts the bully - who kisses him, adding sexual harassment to the already present physical harassment. So he brings in another gay kid to talk to him, and the bully just ignores them. Then the bully threatens to kill Kurt and he becomes so terrified that it begins to affect his health. His friends try to stand up for him, but that just leads to a fight, for which no one is punished. Finally, Kurt admits to the death threat (though not the sexual harassment) and the kid is expelled. Until, of course, his parents go to the school board and get him readmitted. Fearing for his safety, Kurt's parents transfer him to a private school.

There are other problems with this storyline. Personally, I'm sick of the cliche that all homophobes are closet-cases. While this is occasionally true, if you're getting beaten up for being queer, the odds are the person doing it is heterosexual. Plus it perpetuates the stereotype that queer men are sexual predators. But I don't think that this particular criticism is fair or apt.

Actually the odds are that the person doing it identifies as heterosexual, not that they really are.

So you really do think that the majority of people who commit hate crimes are interested in fucking members of the same sex? By that token, all racists are PoC, all misogynists are women, and every single Nazi was Jewish.

Don't get me wrong, I sort of get the appeal of this fallacy. For queer people, it's the equivalent of your mother telling you that all the kids who picked on you were 'just jealous'. It also absolves heterosexuals of any responsibility, since homophobia is something we're doing to ourselves.
