You ain't the only one, anon. It's one of the primary reasons I avoid the show. That and the ableism. And the transphobia.

I don't really think Glee is ableist so much as it tries really hard to come off as supportive and ends up trying so hard that it tries itself off of a cliff of offensiveness.

Not arguing about the transphobia, though.

Okay, I'm honestly curious about this. What transphobia? The only thing even vaguely related was the weird word change in Rocky Horror, which doesn't seem offensive enough to be considered phobic.

tl;dr sorry. ._. you asked.

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2010-11-27 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
I was first raging because "transsexual" is a legitimate medical term and should not be put on par with curse words or sexual references, or at all treated like something that should be censored. The show talks about sex all the time, so it can't even be the word "sexual" in the term, and they didn't censor "transvestite." That was bad, but it was ignorant and annoying, not transphobic.

But then, they had a character casually use the term "tranny" to a teacher, with no repercussions. After the hullaballoo over "faggy," I would have hoped that a supportive and progressive authority figure such as Mister Schue would at least offer a, "Okay, it sucks that you can't do the part, but that's not a cool word to use," or even some indication that "tranny" is just as not-okay as "faggy" is. But nope. Nada. Zip. It wasn't even acknowledged.

Beyond that, while I did not have a problem at all with a lady playing Frank, I didn't like the fact that they slapped her into the same woman's outfit. If she's a girl, she should have been put into male clothing. Instead, they had a scantily clad woman strutting about the stage singing about being a transvestite when she wasn't one. What boundaries does that push? What point does that prove?

Glee has used other offensive terms, like "shemale," in addition to that, but I think it's the complete lack of representation that bothers me more than anything. Glee is addressing issues such as homosexuality, disability, race and ethnicity, sexuality, teenage pregnancy, bullying, sexual harassment, religion, classism, and a lot of other buzzwords, and in general at least trying to promote acceptance [despite the fact that it fails sometimes]. We were shown a chance for a popular show that has established itself as progressive to stand up for the rights of trans people, to make a statement about the purpose of Frank N. Furter's character, and not only does it completely let that chance go out the window, it does something worse than ignoring it: it tramples on the movement, slaps it in the face and says that not only are they not going to stand up for their issues, but they are going to use an offensive slur and act like it's completely okay. Nobody gave a speech about why it was wrong for someone to be offended by their son daring to perform a transsexual character, and that would have been a much better direction for the episode to take, rather than the one it decided on. [And that was what he said; it wasn't the content that Mike's parents had a problem with, it was the fact that he was playing a transsexual.] This could have been an important step, and instead it just perpetuated more offensive mindsets.

Aaaand that is why Glee is transphobic, at least to me.

Like every thing you said. I don't have much to add except...

"If she's a girl, she should have been put into male clothing."

WOW, what an interesting choice that would have been! I think there might have been some back lash with that choice, though, since it would be like covering up Mercedes not size-0 body.

Still, the theatre kid in me is so intrigued with this idea...

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2010-11-27 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't necessarily think you'd have to cover up her body. I mean, just look at some guys. There is a lot of revealing, sexy, male-tailored clothing. You don't have to sacrifice the dripping sex of Dr. Frank just because he's been rewritten as a woman dressed like a man. If anything, considering that male sexiness is often oriented in how much torso they show, it could be more revealing. Cleavage and upper body aside, a corset isn't that showy.

I think it would be interesting, as well.
