I don't think that it's a bad thing to want to write and make art for others. I think of the idea of "doing art only for yourself" as a way to cushion yourself from judgment. If you've done what you set out to do and you're satisfied, then haters won't get you down as much. But if you're out there trying to make others happy with your work and succeeding, that's just as much success as doing it for yourself.

So much. If you're just doing something "for yourself" why post it on the internet?

Do what you like. Like what you do. If you like attention do whatever (within reason) it takes to get it. :B

Really? I always considered writing as putting out there something you would want to read if you weren't you. Sorta like there's a story-shaped hole in the universe, and you're the one who knows how to fill.
It's nice if someone agrees, and it's a decent thing to dedicate your story to someone, but since at the end of the day, it really does come from you.

This so much. Well said.

This. Very much so. Double for really weird crossovers. Also goes for inspired prompts, comments and fic challenges. You are not replaceable.

[identity profile] sour-idealist.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really write for myself either. Partly it is an ego boost (but, hey, it feels good. I don't think it's bad to enjoy being complimented) but also I like knowing I made someone's day a little bit better.

So no, I wouldn't say "doing it wrong."

I've never minded writing for other people. What I so mind is when people troll for comments, and care more about how many comments their fic gets than about the actual fic. Those are the people I judge.

I like your reasoning! Fandom is a social environment so it makes complete sense. I think what the people who say "write for yourself" mean is that you shouldn't write because you feel obligated to or if it stresses you out. You don't seem to be caught up in that, so good for you!

(Anonymous) 2010-12-09 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a difference between filling prompts for people and writing to make others happy, and wanting everyone to love your fic and spam you with comments (and QQing when they don't). The first is finding what people want to read and writing it specifically for them. Yay, making people happy! I don't think anyone has any problems with this.

It's the other one that people have problems with, because that's basically the author writing whatever the hell they want and expecting everyone to TREAT it like the author wrote it specifically for them, which the author didn't (then bawwing when people don't look at it like some kind of gift from the heavens). THOSE are the kinds of authors that people tell to write for themselves, because the chances of people looking at their fic like some kind of gift from the heavens? Is really really slim

I think that is fine.
It makes sense to me.

Hey, I do almost nothing except write birthday fics/fill prompts/accept challenges, and I churn out heaps of fic. I think it helps to have at least one person you know is going to read it and enjoy it, and if that makes us bad people, we should totally start a Iwriteforothers comm or something. XD

[identity profile] sarajayechan.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Usually when people say "write for yourself" they mean "don't write what you hate just because it's popular, and don't cave in to the demands of rabid shippers/reviewers/elitists/etc".

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah -- it's a fine line, OP, but you're not doing it wrong.

When people, myself included, say "don't write for others, write for yourself," we mean that you should write what makes you happy. If filling prompts and whatnot makes you happy, go for it. But you shouldn't write something because you feel like you're obligated to, because you feel like you have to in order to get recognition. Like . . . say you don't like the ship Character A/Character B, and instead prefer Character B/Character C. However, Character A/Character B is the most popular ship in the fandom. If you don't like Character A/Character B, you shouldn't feel like you have to write that ship for your fic to mean anything. You shouldn't write solely to please others, bringing no enjoyment to yourself.

On the other hand, if you enjoy writing Character A/Character B and seeing people squee over it, then by all means, go for it. When it comes right down to it, do what makes you happy, OP. So long as you're doing that, you're Doing It Right. =)

In the last two years I have only written two fics that were not prompt fills, birthday fic, or for an exchange. There's nothing wrong with that, and anyone who says they are writing *just* for themselves is lying if they've got their fic accessible online. If you seek an audience, you are never writing *just* for yourself.

Also, maybe you want to take a gander at #11 :)

You're not doing it wrong. Saying "write/do it for yourself" makes sure that at the end of the day, you're happy with what you created, and if you don't get the squee from others, at least you had fun doing it and helped yourself get more practice. But if you're getting squee and making others happy, then there's nothing wrong with that.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I do both. Writing to share is part of the fun of writing. I can fantasize vividly and easily without putting fingers to keyboard, so there is no reason to write purely for myself. But at the same time I don't write anything that I don't also enjoy myself. That just leads to being a hack.

I absolutely love kinkmemes and filling people's requests.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Says who? I mean, writing for others is perfectly valid; I might even say it's a little more challenging, because you're writing under certain parameters (like, a request) instead of just whatever pops into your head. Keep doing your thing!

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
If writing for others is what makes you happy, then you're doing it right. It's when writing turns into something that you feel is work, or an obligation, and you're not getting any joy out of it that I haul out the "write for yourself" advice. And by that I don't mean "only write the stories you want to read for yourself", but that writing as a process is something that (at least when you're writing fanfic) you should do because it brings you satisfaction and not because you're bending the story into a shape that displeases or disgusts you for the sake of making it fit into a perceived requirement from the people who might read it.

We do enough of the obligatory writing for our bosses and our teachers and our paychecks. Hobby writing should be fun.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I hear you - I write for myself, because otherwise the characters would kick around in my head and distract me from other things, but I post for other people.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
It's only bad to want to write for others if you become obsessed about it and stake all your happiness in whether or not people will like your fic.

If you're able to write fic for others enjoyment but don't get discouraged if they don't like it, then I think you're doing it right. :)

That's not doing it wrong. I think it's nice =)

[identity profile] inkedfeathers.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, that's very sweet.

I do think if you're writing something that might entertain just one other person, then you should write it.

There's nothing wrong with doing things for others, especially in this case. You're not hurting yourself or anyone else, you're trying to make others happy! ♥

That's a kind thing to do.

[identity profile] mjnuts.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I love you for writing for others. :) It's okay to do it for yourself, but it's nothing short of amazing to do it to make everyone else happy.

Now if only you could be a fan of Wicked... lol
