Now that I think of it, it was truly amazing, and I want to see it again so badly! Thanks for reminding me of my childhood, OP. Have a puppy!

Not that related to the secret, but can I just say that I really hate the implication that animation is a lesser medium than anything else? The "it's a cartoon, it's for kids" attitude, etc.?

That said... I love The Lion King. It's a really well-made movie, and one of my favorites. And the stampede sequence is wonderful. <3

I still can't watch that scene. Well played, Lion King.

[identity profile] roaringmay.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
The Lion King is one of the finest films in cinema.
That scene has to be one of the best moments ever. Every time I watch it - and it's been dozens of times -, I still tear up. It is a truly powerful scene.

I actually think that scene is a very idealized suspension/horror sequence. It has all the parts--dramatic camera angles, character in obvious and easy to see peril, suspenseful music, etc. If it was live action it would have gotten an award, but considering it's The Lion King, it probably got one anyway. :)

[identity profile] ayeayes.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, definitely.

[identity profile] luxis-lil.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It is a PERFECT scene. The beginning part when the "camera" zooms in on Simba as he realizes what's coming towards him, accommpanied with the loud gasp from the choir on the soundtrack sends chills down my spine EVERY. FUCKING. TIME.

As an animator, what I like the most are the emotions of Simba after the sequence, and his motions resembling a child that had witnessed a traumatic event.

A brilliant moment.

Wow, I just watched this movie yesterday for the first time in a while.
And I have to admit, this is the one scene in a movie that's able to make me revert back to a childhood mindset and hope that maybe, just maybe, Mufasa won't get trampled this time. xP

It's a powerful scene, OP.

[identity profile] innatizzy.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That scene has always bothered me. The number of wildebeast is just so over the top and ridiculous. I find it annoying. They could have done the same scene with the same impact with a reasonable amount of animals.

Yes, strange things bother me.

Other than that, good movie.

One of my favorite scenes of animation ever from one of, if not my all time favorite, animated film.

However one little thing always bothered me though when watching the scene, even when I was a little kid. Why didn't the wildebeest even attempt to stop or even avoid their friggen' King and Prince? It's established from the start that the other animals all respect and honour Mufasa and his brood but they all just mindlessly trample of them. Shouldn't at least one of them have been like; "Oh shit! The royals! Hey guys, we better be careful here." Even the hyenas think twice before messing with Mufasa. I know they were running in the first place to avoid being eaten but I'm sure two lions against a herd of HUNDREDS of them wouldn't have been that much to worry about.

I know, I know; "Just shut up and enjoy the scene Rose." :P

Totally agreed, it's such an impressive scene.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-09 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
So many Lion King secrets lately. Did they release a new sequel or something?

[identity profile] quorothorn.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally, I think animation is, if anything, "higher" art than live-action is. At the least, they're even.

And that is a darn good scene.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, no, that movie is completely boss. It's one of those ones that I loved as a kid and can now look back on as a film-obsessed adult and go "you know, it really WAS that good!" I mean, the music is stunning, and extra points for using a push-pull shot in animation. Nice one, Disney!

...God, now I'm remembering how I used to listen to that soundtrack when I was in bed at night as a kid (on a cassette tape, ho ho ho) and I seriously couldn't even listen to "...To Die For" because it would just make me cry and freak out because it's SO INTENSE and then saaaaaad. ;____; WHY YOU BREAK MY HEART, ZIMMER

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Cartoons have some of the best scenes of all time.

I agree that this scene was flawless and the movie is awesome.

[identity profile] accented.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
It was a perfect scene. I think the most powerful part is a little before that, when Scar pushes Mufasa off the ledge and says "Long live the King"

At World of Color at California Adventures, there was this moment where they stopped all the lights and sounds and that line just echoed throughout the stage. It was haunting.

[identity profile] missing-mile-15.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
This movie is flawless. IDGAF if people think less of me if I say it's one of my favorite movies. So much gorgeous animation.

The Lion King is an amazing movie in general. I wish I knew more about animation and filmmaking so I could really understand more of the small-yet-awesome details that went into the process.

[identity profile] eralkfang.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
That entire film is beautiful.

[identity profile] spittingfish.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
That's like, top ten movies.

[identity profile] box-life.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Where Simba screams "DAAAAAD!" very consistently gives me chills. And the Lion King is still in my top ten or so favorite movies. :)

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
No matter how many times I watch that scene, I always get scared that Simba won't make it out EVEN THOUGH I KNOW HE WILL and I always have hope that Mufasa will make it out alive EVEN THOUGH I KNOW HE WON'T. :'(
