That scene has always bothered me. The number of wildebeast is just so over the top and ridiculous. I find it annoying. They could have done the same scene with the same impact with a reasonable amount of animals.

Yes, strange things bother me.

Other than that, good movie.

Are you by any chance the same person who was just recently (yesterday?) annoyed that Scar had too many hyenas marching in front of him? If not, then concern over population sizes in the Lion King might be a "thing."

[identity profile] innatizzy.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Different person.

Although the hyena thing didn't bother me as much because it was in a musical number. I consider them to be more like fantasy numbers, so they don't have to be inside the reality of the storyline.

If that makes any sense.

Um, have you never watched a nature documentary or film on herd animals. Wildebeast especially are in HUGE numbers when they migrate. Low foodchain animals like them: caribou, zebra, antelope or buffalo travel(ed) in HUGE numbers.

Yes, there really are a gazillion animals together all 'hive' minded.
Think schools of fish, but mammals and on land.

I was just about to say this.

[identity profile] innatizzy.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
Hm, I don't know what nature documentaries you're watching. Because the ones I watch, while they are in large numbers, were not in the crazy amounts in that movie. Which is why it bothered me. They could have been perfectly realistic with a huge stampede, because they do get gigantic, but they decided to push it up into crazyville numbers.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-10 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
When you have 10,000 animals moving through a canyon and you panic them (remember?), the idea of one lion cub being surrounded/overrun by that many animals isn't crazyville at all. It's actually pretty realistic.

[identity profile] innatizzy.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, I think you're confused? The idea of one lion cub being surrounded/overrun by a stampede isn't what I thought was crazy. The number of animals the animators put in that scene is the crazy. Which was way over 10,000.

But it's cool. Still a good movie, despite my nit pickyness.

'it is estimated that herd sizes can reach 1.5 million wildebeest, not to mention just under a million zebras, topi and eland.' (http://www.bbc.com/travel/feature/20101206-migration-and-the-masai-mara)
