I agree. Tbh the shadow of Sondheim was kind of hanging over all the musical numbers, especially "Mother Knows Best." I wasn't the only one sitting there twitching slightly and humming "Stay With Me" under my breath during that number, was I?

OMG. My friend actually turned to me about halfway through the movie and said, "Is it just me, or is she totally the Witch from Into the Woods." Even though the voice isn't really the same, I half-expected it to be Bernadette Peters doing Mother Gothel's voice.

Haha, the reason why I stayed to watch the credits was because I half-expected Mother Gothel to be Bernadette Peters as well!

To be fair, I think a lot of Rapunzel stories are going to make Mother Gothel pretty similar (at one point though, yeah, I did wonder if it was Bernadette Peters), though at least in ItW, the Witch wants Rapunzel for the sake of having a family, not anything inherently magic.

During the reprise of "Mother Knows Best" however, my brain began substituting other words:
"They're NOT all that impressed with conversation.
True gentlemen avoid it when they can."


...no idea why.
