The music was SURPRISINGLY bland. It felt like it hadn't been written to be a musical then someone was like IT SHOULD BE A MUSICAL!!!
"Mother knows best" was alright, everything else was like white noise. When I found out that the people who worked on so many great musicals wrote the music for this i was shocked! It REALLY feels like they are phoning it in

[identity profile] x0whitelily0x.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I agree. I mean, the songs were all really enjoyable and catchy (especially 'Mama Knows Best')... they just didn't really leave much impact.

Though ironically, after the movie I went and listened to 'I See The Light' and liked it better than I remembered. XD; Maybe the visuals were just distracting me?

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't really need to be a secret. Menken didn't write the lyrics, which I think was a big part of why they fell a little flat -- not to mention the execution of some of the songs, especially Mother Gothel's was awkward and didn't have the same transition effect that some of the older Disney films (or Princess and the Frog, which had great music, but was really missing that big showstopper piece) have.

+1

I totally agree on this. I absolutely loved the movie, but I would have been happier if they'd left the songs out. They just didn't feel like they belonged there.

[identity profile] bazcat89.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Tbh the shadow of Sondheim was kind of hanging over all the musical numbers, especially "Mother Knows Best." I wasn't the only one sitting there twitching slightly and humming "Stay With Me" under my breath during that number, was I?

Man, I so agree.

I actually can't tell if this is a sort-of dig at The Princess and The Frog music. "Come on, even that movie had better music!"

I agree. As a stand alone, the music is nice - not something I've gone out of my way to listen to again though. Very different from other Disney musicals.

I think part of the issue - and I can't remember exactly where I read it but I think it was in one of the Tangled communities - where they actually told Menken they wanted something different from his older more Broadway-sounding music.

[identity profile] anindeliblemark.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of edited out all the music after my first viewing, if that makes any sense. But now, a couple weeks later, I'm still listening to "I've Got A Dream." I think they work better as separate entities, somehow.

[identity profile] cykstar.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, but I still love the music oddly enough. The first time I saw the movie, I didn't really feel so excited, but then the more I thought about it and when I started listening to the soundtrack, the more I fell in love.

I have an odd relationship with movies.

[identity profile] luxis-lil.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
And here I was being bitter that Menken did Tangled instead of PatF!

I thought so too, but upon viewing the movie two or three times more, I really grew to love the songs.

[identity profile] twilightedge.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't know much about the music when I watched it but when she was singing about leaving the tower it sounded like Ariel's 'part of their world' (sorry if that's the wrong title, it's been forever since I've seen the movie) and it seemed to repeat again during the boat scene, either that or it was similar to Aladdin. I don't know if he was involved in either project but that took me out of the movie.

[identity profile] bamf-girl.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Not a single song stuck with me after I walked out of the theater, and that is ridiculous, I am a lover of musicals. The music was just... so shoe-horned, I don't think it should have been a musical.

[identity profile] ionizable.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
honestly if zachary levi wasn't the one singing i would have totally forgotten everything about the music

[identity profile] madamotaku.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this movie would have been better without musical numbers. As it is now, I like the movie, but without the unnecessary musical bits, I might have loved it. Not that the songs were bad. Just awkwardly shoved in. Mother Knows Best is the only one I can really recall.

Just my opinion, but PatF had one of the best, if not THE best, music in a Disney musical. I'm a huge fan of jazz and zydeco though. The VAs were AMAZING, and I loved Almost There. I'm always disappointed when people say that PatF wasn't that great. I freakin loved it.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-09 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I can agree with that. I mean, Mother Knows Best was good, but COME ON:

Fucking amazing.

Am I the only one who disagrees? The Princess and the Frog songs didn't really do anything for me, but I really enjoyed the music in Tangled!

The music isn't so bad in Tangled, but it's definitely not what I would expect from Menken. My thought is that it was tailored to more of Mandy Moore's style.

It's just not...memorable at ALL. It's not classic Disney like I had hoped for. "I See The Light" and "Mama Knows Best" were the only two songs that really seemed like that to me, and I still don't really remember those songs very well.

Oh well, though XD I enjoyed the movie, so I can look past the not-super-amazing music.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
This is not exactly an unpopular opinion. Most people who saw the movie agree with you.

Personally, I loved the OST. And I liked it much more than the PatF OST.

[identity profile] accented.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
The only songs I really loved was When Will My Life Begin? and I See the Light. I think combined with the scene during the latter (which I can say is one of my favorite Disney moments ever), the music worked perfectly. I also think the first song was adorable and made a good opening.

Although, I loved PaTF's music overall. Almost There and Friends on the Other Side especially.

Neither of those movies hold a candle to Lion King though, just saying.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
The music is pretty forgettable, and I kind of wish there wasn't so much damn singing even though the numbers were so few compared to other Disney animated musical animated movies. It didn't fit the style of the movie in my opinion. I think Mother Knows Best is the only one that I liked, but even then, the only line I sort of remember is the the "something something listen to mama(?) don't something something......(Mother knows best????)"

[identity profile] usedtobehmc.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
I just saw it tonight, and mothereffin' AGREED. What then hell, Menken writes tunes for Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Little Shop of Horrors... and then THIS? What happened?

"Mother Knows Best" was okay, but it wasn't catchy!! There were no hooks. So as bad-ass as it was, I couldn't even hum a few bars now if you held a gun to my head.

[identity profile] gidget-lawliet.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with this. And it seems that people forget that Alan Menken was the composer, not the lyricist, so the songs could still be unimpressive if the lyrics were weak.

I really loved the songs in The Princess and the Frog, I bought the soundtrack right after seeing the movie. I did enjoy the songs for Rapunzel/Tangled, just not enough to do the same.
