I didn't read the manga because I kept hearing that it moved away from exactly the things that made me love the (first) anime. If it's true that Ed and Al "walked off in different directions" at the end, I just had it all confirmed D:

See, I don't really see it like that. Speaking as a devout lover of the first anime over pretty much everything else, to me it seems like even though they both went on to do different things away from each other, but stayed together as a family, which is what really matters. I mean, they were obviously close enough to take a casual picture together with their respective kids/wives. =D

I dunno, I loved the ending. Because it felt natural that they went in their own direction, but I don't see any evidence they forgot each other, or even came close to growing apart. If anything, I felt they were stronger for it, because after years of searching and relying on themselves at the cost of everything else and every other relationship, they found balance :)

This may just be me, but I find healthy, well-adjusted relationships really boring in fiction. Their codependency was what made their relationship interesting, like the Winchester brothers or the twins from Dune. Taking that codependency away, and not even hinting that it lingered at all, completely removed any interest I had in exploring it further.

Well, you know, they did go through an awful lot...if you choose to believe that they continued to be co-dependent in that light, even I'd have to admit you'd have a lot of evidence for that interpretation. As much as it would be nice that everything was sunshine and rainbows after that, psychological trauma like they went through (parental abandonment, Trisha's death, their attempt at human transmutation, etc.) just doesn't go away overnight. As a matter of fact, I'd be surprised if it ever went away - you could build a strong case that they might never get over what they went through.

In that way, I think the manga did leave it fairly open. Ed never really forgave his father, just accepted him. They never forgot Trisa, just dismissed any further transmutation attempts because it was a mostly fruitless endeavour (Both have got to be suffering from basically putting their individual love for their mother over the other brother's safety). The anime ending I felt highlighted this especially; once broken, you can't always fix it, but you can try to move on. Frankly, the manga ending seems in the same spirit -(SPOILER ALERT) They didn't end up getting both Ed's limbs back and Al's body, after all.

I don't know, for me things like the overweening kitsch of the bird's nest omake sort of killed the believability of the ending....

Frankly, we didn't see much *dynamic* going on at the end there, Ed and Al hardly talked to each other about anything significant.
I can see why anon (and OP) might be disappointed.

(though, it's no secret I'm not in love with the ending of the manga, so...)

(Also, I can relate. I often love to explore the darker side of seemingly loving relationships as well. I can understand why the ending might put you off!)
