Welcome to every fandom where the canon's finally finished. Usually.

I've just gotten into FMA, so I'm probably talking out of my ass here, but it *seems* like people are still talking about it. Of course they're not going to be as excited and prolific as when the manga and anime were still new, but this fandom seems far from dead.

As to Ed and Al-specific fic and discussions, you might be right there. I mostly see Elricest as far as that goes.

I didn't read the manga because I kept hearing that it moved away from exactly the things that made me love the (first) anime. If it's true that Ed and Al "walked off in different directions" at the end, I just had it all confirmed D:

See, I don't really see it like that. Speaking as a devout lover of the first anime over pretty much everything else, to me it seems like even though they both went on to do different things away from each other, but stayed together as a family, which is what really matters. I mean, they were obviously close enough to take a casual picture together with their respective kids/wives. =D

I dunno, I loved the ending. Because it felt natural that they went in their own direction, but I don't see any evidence they forgot each other, or even came close to growing apart. If anything, I felt they were stronger for it, because after years of searching and relying on themselves at the cost of everything else and every other relationship, they found balance :)

This may just be me, but I find healthy, well-adjusted relationships really boring in fiction. Their codependency was what made their relationship interesting, like the Winchester brothers or the twins from Dune. Taking that codependency away, and not even hinting that it lingered at all, completely removed any interest I had in exploring it further.

[identity profile] authoressarktos.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you know, they did go through an awful lot...if you choose to believe that they continued to be co-dependent in that light, even I'd have to admit you'd have a lot of evidence for that interpretation. As much as it would be nice that everything was sunshine and rainbows after that, psychological trauma like they went through (parental abandonment, Trisha's death, their attempt at human transmutation, etc.) just doesn't go away overnight. As a matter of fact, I'd be surprised if it ever went away - you could build a strong case that they might never get over what they went through.

In that way, I think the manga did leave it fairly open. Ed never really forgave his father, just accepted him. They never forgot Trisa, just dismissed any further transmutation attempts because it was a mostly fruitless endeavour (Both have got to be suffering from basically putting their individual love for their mother over the other brother's safety). The anime ending I felt highlighted this especially; once broken, you can't always fix it, but you can try to move on. Frankly, the manga ending seems in the same spirit -(SPOILER ALERT) They didn't end up getting both Ed's limbs back and Al's body, after all.

[identity profile] ketita.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, for me things like the overweening kitsch of the bird's nest omake sort of killed the believability of the ending....

Frankly, we didn't see much *dynamic* going on at the end there, Ed and Al hardly talked to each other about anything significant.
I can see why anon (and OP) might be disappointed.

(though, it's no secret I'm not in love with the ending of the manga, so...)

[identity profile] authoressarktos.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
(Also, I can relate. I often love to explore the darker side of seemingly loving relationships as well. I can understand why the ending might put you off!)

(Anonymous) 2010-12-10 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
That's because a lot of people secretly hate the manga ending, even though we used to admire the manga-ka, and well we still do, she's a great artist and storyteller but damnit! everything I hated to see happen--happened in that ending. Ed losing his magic touch, brothers growing apart. Everything.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-10 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
she's a great artist and storyteller

Err... that's debatable. Especially calling her a great artist. Decent, sure... but I've never seen anything by her that would take my breath away. Her art was just a vehicle for the story, and while the simplistic style worked for FMA, it's hardly anything I'd laud as great.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-10 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's because the brothers' relationship had lost all focus by the end? As far as the "brotherhood" theme went, the first anime did a much more convincing job. Anyway, the last 20 chapters of the manga were just a disappointment to me overall. Predictable and dragging as all hell. And saccharine, decisive epilogues? Aren't exactly the best way to stimulate creativity in any fandom. Not unless you want to be swamped with babyfic and WAFF, anyway.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-10 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! This is is how I felt too about the final 20-some chapters. And while the first anime also had its share of plot/character development it was much stronger in delivering the emotional impact of brotherhood/camaraderie. I think overall this mangaka is not much different than other mangaka with the fact that it's just hard to stay really focused with a long series from beginning to end...especially when what most mangas span 8-15 years? Sometimes longer? It can get tiresome for the author I imagine.

Predictable and dragging as all hell. And saccharine, decisive epilogues? Aren't exactly the best way to stimulate creativity in any fandom.

But then, this is basically the fate of most, if not ALL authors of long series spanning YEARS and which are aimed at kids/teens/young adults. It takes guts to end something with a more creative note, especially when your series becomes a cash-cow and let's face it when a series becomes a much publicized, marketed, cash-cow lots of authors go the safe route with a happier ending/epilogue OR can be pressured to end it so by editors and what-not.

[identity profile] dragonimp.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the ending pretty much killed off all the manga bunnies I had. Or at least sent them into hiding.

[identity profile] ketita.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
...same here :(

I do like using elements of the world/characters from the manga, just because we know a bit more about the surrounding countries and stuff than we do in the first anime. But I'll probably remain a first anime ficcer, at this point.

[identity profile] puddinchan.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally, I dislike any sort of wives&babies endings, but that's just me.

And I don't like Winry.
