Maybe it's because the brothers' relationship had lost all focus by the end? As far as the "brotherhood" theme went, the first anime did a much more convincing job. Anyway, the last 20 chapters of the manga were just a disappointment to me overall. Predictable and dragging as all hell. And saccharine, decisive epilogues? Aren't exactly the best way to stimulate creativity in any fandom. Not unless you want to be swamped with babyfic and WAFF, anyway.

Thank you! This is is how I felt too about the final 20-some chapters. And while the first anime also had its share of plot/character development it was much stronger in delivering the emotional impact of brotherhood/camaraderie. I think overall this mangaka is not much different than other mangaka with the fact that it's just hard to stay really focused with a long series from beginning to end...especially when what most mangas span 8-15 years? Sometimes longer? It can get tiresome for the author I imagine.

Predictable and dragging as all hell. And saccharine, decisive epilogues? Aren't exactly the best way to stimulate creativity in any fandom.

But then, this is basically the fate of most, if not ALL authors of long series spanning YEARS and which are aimed at kids/teens/young adults. It takes guts to end something with a more creative note, especially when your series becomes a cash-cow and let's face it when a series becomes a much publicized, marketed, cash-cow lots of authors go the safe route with a happier ending/epilogue OR can be pressured to end it so by editors and what-not.

Well, the ending pretty much killed off all the manga bunnies I had. Or at least sent them into hiding.

...same here :(

I do like using elements of the world/characters from the manga, just because we know a bit more about the surrounding countries and stuff than we do in the first anime. But I'll probably remain a first anime ficcer, at this point.
