DUDE. THIS REALLY ISN'T A SECRET. I HAVE A HARD TIME FINDING PEOPLE WHO EVEN ADMIT THAT HOENN WAS "ALRIGHT" LET ALONE ADMIT THAT THEY LIKE IT.

To be perfectly honest I am actually more excited about the chance that Nintendo will remake Ruby and Sapphire than I was about Gold and Silver. I have no idea why, maybe it's just the nostalgia factor or something...

I didn't read the manga so I can't comment on the characterisation further, and I forgot about the anime midway through Johto, which was much worse.

Meanwhile, gen three is the one I MOST want to play. MY KINGDOM FOR EMERALD. So many Pokemon I love are from Hoenn, and it's the only gen I can't find D8 (For Kanto, I have Yellow and FireRed, Johto has HeartGold, and Sinnoh has Platinum.)

Lol dude this is not a secret, everybody thinks Hoenn sucks. Except me. Okay so how about let's turn this into a Hoenn LOVE THREAD and talk about how awesome Hoenn is!

The Pokes: Obviously there are people who are like OMG everything after Gen II sucks all the Pokemon look like Digimon!!! etc. Well, I'm not gonna change your mind, but consider how weird it would be for there to be no Mudkip, Gardevoir, Roselia, or Metagross. I really like the designs of the Pokemon this generation, because they fit so well into Hoenn's geography. Speaking of...

The Geography: Oh my god the geography in Hoenn is the bomb. Volcanoes! A town in a hollowed-out crater in the middle of the ocean! A space center with a rocket ship! How can anybody hate a town made of TREEHOUSES? (And yeah, I think part of the reason the geography is so awesome is because of all the islands/surfing.) Fact: the top three cities I'd want to live in in the Pokemon world are in Hoenn.

3rd gen also introduced Battle Frontiers, which is awesome. There's now actual post-game stuff to do, guys!

Contests: Whether you like to do them or not, doesn't really matter, because you don't have to do them to advance the main game storyline. What I think is really neat about contests, though, is that it opened up opportunities for female characters in the anime that actually do stuff! I love Misty but she didn't really have a quest or a goal of her own. May paved the way for Dawn, who became more of a protagonist in her own right than any other girl before her. (I still <3 anime May though, even if nobody else does!)

tl;dr, everybody who HAETS Gen III but LOVES Gen IV seems to totally ignore that a lot of the reasons Gen IV was so successful was because it built upon the ideas introduced in Gen III!

I love how all the comments are 'no one liked Hoenn except me'. I never really got why people dislike it so much, GSC were what I played growing up but I still get way more misty-eyed thinking about my Sapphire... can't wait for them to be remade.

I love pokèmon games, but I'm not into the fandom, so I was really surprised to find out that people hate Hoenn and gen III.
I mean, why? Hoenn is an awesome region, imho, with the desert, and the volcano, and the forest, and SUB! I loved to hell exploring this region! And the contest are funny, for me. And I love a lot of pokemon in this gen, blaziken and flygon are in my top ten of favourite pokemon ever...
No, really, I don't get all the hate. I love RSE like I've loved BRY and GSC before them so, you know, haters gonna hate. I feel bad for them : /

I can't speak for the game or anime, but the Hoenn arc of PokeSpe was my FAVORITE. Ruby and Sapphire were my favorite heroes; they had such strongly-defined personalities! (and it was a LOVE STORY BABY JUST SAY YES, so my fangirl heart was appeased!)

Agree about the surfing though. I don't think an already established hatred of all things called "water levels", "water themes", and water pokemon too really helped that hyper-annoying part(s). Also, I wish Wally had been a clear rival. And a main character in the manga :(

RSE are my least favorite games (I like them, but not enough to replay them) and I outright refuse to watch the Hoenn (and sinnoh too tho) anime seasons but the manga arc?

It was so refreshing to see a badass, trainer lady like Sapphire and a coordinator dude like Ruby because it pretty much takes the whole 'only dudes can fight gym leaders and be the pokemon champion!' thing and reverses it and it is AWESOME. And Winona was the most badass, hdu.

Now you're making me want to reread the Hoenn arc, yo.

Um, R/S/E had a plot. o-0; More of a plot than Gen I or Gen II, and I'm a known Gen II fangirl. Incidentally, did you ever play Emerald? Because Emerald > Ruby/Sapphire by far.
