Well, fair enough - but keep in mind that not everyone reads it that way. I certainly don't see it as fetish fuel, though as ever, your mileage may vary.

And speaking for myself, I love seeing obvious, blatant homosexuality, to the point of what some consider "tasteless" in my canon, because to me not every relationship has to be ~meaningful~ and ~tasteful~ and deeply integral to the plot, much like I don't always look for a deep, meaningful relationship. Hell, a lot of the time I don't.

I also love that 'tasteless' level of relationship because it seems particularly fierce and unapologetic to me (not that a dedicated and implied relationship can't be - but oftentimes they aren't painted in the same bold strokes). It is joyful and alive. I love to watch it, I love the thought of it.

Finally - to demand a consistently deep level of relationships from fictional gay couples and to denounce everything else as unbearable fetish fuel and fap material that ruins everything it touches is also deepy problematic - it suggests that gay casual sex is unwholesome and the only way homosexuality can be redeemed or normalized is by somehow establishing every queer man seeks the romantic ideal at all times and abstains from sexual relationships until he finds it.

I think if we are to reach an ideal at all, it's by including both types of relationships in a yaoi setting - deeper, soulmate, you-complete-me type stuff, and the purely physical (and sometimes tasteless and/or ridiculous).

But ah, ideals, when do we ever reach those?

I kind of feel the same way as the OP. It's not because I'm looking for deep relationships all the time--in fact, I'd love to see more stuff that has the kind of casual relationships you're talking about. However, I have a hard time finding anything that doesn't just tease, and only just enough that the characters can safely retreat back into heterosexuality without causing a scene. I've pretty much had my fill of "Oooh, they're all over each other--! But lol, there's not really anything going on." The two guys act grossed out when presented with actual homosexuality. The two girls have male love interests on the side. That bothers the hell out of me, because it's obviously designed to appeal to yaoi/yuri fans without rocking the boat and making any of that icky-poo gay stuff actually happen.

If the fanservice in question consisted of, say, the male main character and another dude sincerely having an attraction to each other, I would be all over that shit, even if it didn't go anywhere, because hey! Sometimes people find each other hot. But too often it exists in this weird middle ground where the audience is supposed to get the hint and be titillated but the characters don't see anything gay about it.

Actually if you put it that way I do agree on all accounts. And have nothing more intelligent to add so . . . definitely yes, and I may have gotten it the wrong way in this case :)

I... think you may have just nailed what bugs me about this that I could never put my finger on. Thank you.
