Righto, I could've worded the secret better.

My secret wasn't about fanservice itself (it exists and nobody can help it), it was about using gay undertones as a form of fanservice. With the manga I've read it's much more common than lesbian undertones, though I dislike both equally.

Basically I don't think the concept of homosexuality should be treated as mere fetish fuel. I don't see it as a very tasteful approach to the subject. Can't an implied couple be honestly canon gay so it's actually meaningful plotwise and NOT just "act a little queer tee-hee" for the sole purpose of inspiring the audience to fap?

...but maybe people like sexual tension in relationships? Maybe that's what keeps people reading? This is done with het all the time, it is the very lifeblood of shojo manga, that "will-they-or-won't-they" plotline. I still don't see what makes is so bad about it being gay fanservice/tension in particular. I don't see why having your male characters flirt with each other and not having that relationship necessarily come to anything is equal to treating them as fetish fuel :/

so basically you are overreacting?

Ok, thanks for explaining what you meant.

I agree that homosexuality is often laughed off or played for fun in media. And that's terrible. However, I really like ambiguous undertones-- mainly because I don't like romance getting a ton of screen time, the aspects of romance that interest me are often the subtle interactions between characters, and ok I do enjoy a bit of fanservice sometimes.

Of course you have the right to your opinion, just as I have a right to mine, and it would be wrong to tell each other otherwise. I do have to say you come off as an elitist ass and your word choice was horrid. BUT. Thanks again for taking the time to calmly state what you meant, though; instead of starting another terrifying wank-fest like the last time people pointed out somebody's problematic wording D:

wait, no it isn't terrible. I meant, rather, that it's unfortunate and has some distressing implications

I am explaining really horribly today ):

...lol fetish fuel. Yes, totally. I enjoy gay ust because I want to fap to it like no tomorrow. Not because I'm interested in the UST in their relationship or anything.

Well, fair enough - but keep in mind that not everyone reads it that way. I certainly don't see it as fetish fuel, though as ever, your mileage may vary.

And speaking for myself, I love seeing obvious, blatant homosexuality, to the point of what some consider "tasteless" in my canon, because to me not every relationship has to be ~meaningful~ and ~tasteful~ and deeply integral to the plot, much like I don't always look for a deep, meaningful relationship. Hell, a lot of the time I don't.

I also love that 'tasteless' level of relationship because it seems particularly fierce and unapologetic to me (not that a dedicated and implied relationship can't be - but oftentimes they aren't painted in the same bold strokes). It is joyful and alive. I love to watch it, I love the thought of it.

Finally - to demand a consistently deep level of relationships from fictional gay couples and to denounce everything else as unbearable fetish fuel and fap material that ruins everything it touches is also deepy problematic - it suggests that gay casual sex is unwholesome and the only way homosexuality can be redeemed or normalized is by somehow establishing every queer man seeks the romantic ideal at all times and abstains from sexual relationships until he finds it.

I think if we are to reach an ideal at all, it's by including both types of relationships in a yaoi setting - deeper, soulmate, you-complete-me type stuff, and the purely physical (and sometimes tasteless and/or ridiculous).

But ah, ideals, when do we ever reach those?

I kind of feel the same way as the OP. It's not because I'm looking for deep relationships all the time--in fact, I'd love to see more stuff that has the kind of casual relationships you're talking about. However, I have a hard time finding anything that doesn't just tease, and only just enough that the characters can safely retreat back into heterosexuality without causing a scene. I've pretty much had my fill of "Oooh, they're all over each other--! But lol, there's not really anything going on." The two guys act grossed out when presented with actual homosexuality. The two girls have male love interests on the side. That bothers the hell out of me, because it's obviously designed to appeal to yaoi/yuri fans without rocking the boat and making any of that icky-poo gay stuff actually happen.

If the fanservice in question consisted of, say, the male main character and another dude sincerely having an attraction to each other, I would be all over that shit, even if it didn't go anywhere, because hey! Sometimes people find each other hot. But too often it exists in this weird middle ground where the audience is supposed to get the hint and be titillated but the characters don't see anything gay about it.

Actually if you put it that way I do agree on all accounts. And have nothing more intelligent to add so . . . definitely yes, and I may have gotten it the wrong way in this case :)

You said it much better than I could <3

I... think you may have just nailed what bugs me about this that I could never put my finger on. Thank you.

Ohhhhhhh now I get you. Half agree/disagree here, but whatever.

Often times, the "implied couple" isn't implied at all. It's just a tease for the people watching the show, but never anything more than that. You get the same thing with het themes as well; just look at any harem anime/manga, or even the reverse harem in shoujo. If I'm on some shipping fever rush, yeah, those fanservice scenes do help to fuel some foundations for fic or art. But because it's taken lightly, it's not something I'd like to see handled in canon because I don't trust it to be done well (not I'm doing a better job with my fic).

Perhaps you should look for series that actually intend to handle homesexuality, or use legitimate romance plots/subplots. If you're alright with femmeslash, might I recommend Aoi Hana?

Re: OP

[identity profile] cykstar.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I love Aoi Hana, it's so sweeeettt ;_; (and everything else that woman creates).

Re: OP

You're just an elitist, that's all.

Re: OP

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I understand what you mean and I agree with you.

Re: OP

[identity profile] cykstar.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Like cloud_riven, half agree/disagree. I don't like the undertones for the sake of fetishizing, but it really depends on the characters and the intention of the series.
