I also find it funny that the non-crazy anime fans are so in the closet about liking anime, that they help perpetuate the stereotype that all anime fans are crazy -- since those are the only "out" fans that anyone ever comes across.

I think a big reason for that is that the non-crazy fans also don't care as much about anime, and thus aren't as inclined to admit they like it just to prove not all anime fans are nuts. A lot of us have far more important things to do than influence public opinion about a hobby.

The kawaii desu~ "weeaboo" types OP describes care surprisingly little about actual anime. Really. I've talked to a lot of these people -- usually they watch like four or five series and that's about it. Their lives revolve around a highly specialized fandom (like generic yaoi fandom, or one really popular series) and various aspects of Japanese pop culture. If you try to talk to them about a particular character designer, or specific animation studio, their eyes glaze over.

They're not really animation fans, they're just in it for the stupid subculture
