Sadly, I agree, anon. A lot of my friends that like anime refuse to grow up/act like they're 10 not 23, are socially awkward and have no volume control. I hate it, a lot.


But it still doesn't stop me from liking anime, and a lot of "main stream" anime like Soul Eater, Code Geass, Pokemon and such. Just have to ignore the annoying ones. And once you go to a con or two it's really easy to learn the ones to ignore.

I sort of agree with you. I have two friends in particular who keep recommending anime to me despite the fact that I have clearly said 'Thank you, but I'm really just not interested'. Because I'm not. I have nothing against anime and I realise many very different shows and movies fall in that realm, but I just have no interest in watching it. It's becoming rather a strain on our friendships that they apparently can't take 'no' for an answer. I've even watched a few anime movies with them, concluded that nope, it stil wasn't particularly interesting to me, and they keep persisting.

Also, OP isn't really generalizing to ALL anime fans, just the ones they know IRL which are the ones other people they know IRL would associate them with if OP also became an anime fan. If those particular people are annoying - which I belief is what OP says - I can understand not wanting to be associated with them.

This is very close to why it took me so long to get into anything Japanese. Once I dipped my toe into a couple of fandoms, I realized it wasn't all that bad. But truthfully, I'd rather read manga any day. Anime is a little too... high energy and weird to me.

You can still watch anime and enjoy it without associating yourself with those kinds of anime fans op. Distance yourself from them and find some calmer anime fans to hang out with or something, problem solved.

I can understand not wanting to be judged because of the stereotypes -- I always keep my nerdiness to myself when I don't know someone well to avoid an automatic "oh you're a loser nerd and that's all" judgment. But that doesn't mean you have to be close-minded to all anime in general or to your friends recommendations (you seem to imply your friends are giving you recommendations and that they're embarrassing to be around when it comes to anime too, which is rude to say the least). ::shrugs::

I have a huge problem reading this kind of secret, as much as I can see where you're coming from. To allow your fear of tarnishing your reputation get in the way of finding new things to enjoy...It seems rather petty, honestly.

I cannot stand the Kingdom Hearts fandom, not one bit. My boyfriend's buddies had several yard sales and fundraisers to raise money for KH costumes and wigs, and now that they have their materials, they get together on weekends and pretend to be the characters they cosplay (to make matters worse, they film this and post the vids to YouTube). You have no idea how embarrassed I am for them, particularly now that my sister has become their Sora.

Regardless, I still love the hell out of the games and its soundtrack, but I don't flaunt it like I'm some fashionista on the runway. Just because you take a liking to something doesn't mean you have to make it clear to everyone around you. I don't want to be associated with those obsessive creeps you see at conventions either, but I'm still willing to like whatever anime I damn well please.

To me, it just sounds like you're allowing the fandom to control you in a way.

I feel your pain, anon. All of my offline friends who are big into anime like I used to be are the exact same way. They fucking terrify me now that I no longer share the interest, and I've steered clear of any recs they've sent my way mostly because our tastes are nothing alike.

But...I still think you're cheating yourself by not checking out series even you think you would find enjoyable just because the fans you know are batshit. Just find a sane fan community online and don't tell anyone IRL that you watch it. It's worked for me for years.

Seriously though, I know some people (probably the vocal majority of animu fans) who are absolutely fucking intolerable when it comes to their love of KAWAII NIPPON!, but I am still pretty open about liking anime, myself... mainly because I know no one I'm actually friends with would group me with those assholes. :/ As in... I know I'm not terrible, so I have no fear of being regarded as terrible. Like anon said, OP, you must have pretty low self-esteem.

My rule of thumb with anime (and most other things) is that I don't mention it unless whoever I'm talking to mentions it first. I'm with you on this one, OP - anime fans have a really unpleasant stereotype that goes along with them, and I'd rather not have people make that sort of assumption about me either.

I also find it funny that the non-crazy anime fans are so in the closet about liking anime, that they help perpetuate the stereotype that all anime fans are crazy -- since those are the only "out" fans that anyone ever comes across.

Liking anime doesn't require you to hang out with people who embarass you. Believe it or not you can enjoy anime in the privacy of your own home and no one would be the wiser!

Alternatively you can grow a pair and not worry so much about what other people think of you. Live your life on your own terms. It's more enjoyable that way.

Seriously, yes, if you get into anime you will be associated with obnoxious screaming weeaboos at some point in time. Every single anime fan does. But those of us who are not obnoxious screaming weeaboos but continue to enjoy anime do so because we enjoy it enough that random people we barely know making assumptions about us doesn't phase us. It's kind of sad that you're so concerned with how others view you that you're refusing to let yourself try new things, but whatever. You sound kinda petty and not like someone anime fandom needs anyway.
