I'm not sure I have much of an opinion about manga in particular, but in general, this bothers me a lot, too.

It's not that I don't like sexual undertones and ambiguous relationships -- I love them sometimes. But representation of gay characters has a long history of being "ambiguous" in order to not offend or attract controversy. And sometimes I feel like writers are aware that by creating subtext, they'll attract the attention of people who are really desperate for gay characters (whether they're yaoi fangirls or queer people who would really like some representation) without having to actually write gay characters. There's nothing wrong with subtext, but it's nothing to get too excited about, either.

I'm not sure if the trends I've recognized in western media really apply to manga, and there are probably particulars that I'm not aware of, but I can definitely relate to where you're coming from, on principle.
