Wait, they're using old promo pictures of the show they're making fan art of, selling these for profit - and thinks no one will notice? Hasn't anyone called them out on this?

(Anonymous) 2010-12-30 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
...They're doing that still?

(okay, okay, I know this secret could be about anyone, but my first thought went to the whole Thanfiction debacle.)

[identity profile] humblebot.livejournal.com 2010-12-30 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Call them out on it! That's illegal! Where ever they're attempting to sell it, if it's online, they can probably be taken down.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-30 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
ANONING LIKE THE WIND

you're talking about [livejournal.com profile] pennies_4_eyes, aren't you, and frankly if you are I agree

[identity profile] aquaricom.livejournal.com 2010-12-30 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
...creepy!!

[identity profile] 8bitcat.livejournal.com 2010-12-30 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey.
I have that filter on my Photoshop, too. :D

(Anonymous) 2010-12-30 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
That was my first thought too. They didn't even TRY, for goodness sake.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-30 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
the above anon replying to their own comment to say:

if you google the actors in question, you do bring up the photos the artist used

they're not all official promos, but they are photos

the bodies/clothes are not copied from the photos, so let's assume she drew those, but the faces are straight from photos

just so we're not being totally harsh here.

the irritation for me is her complaint that painting one of the actors faces was really difficult, that tips it over the edge

and i think she is not so much pretending she drew them from scratch as allowing people in the fandom to believe she drew them from scratch, which is not quite the same

(Anonymous) 2010-12-31 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
OP here.
BY GOD YES.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-31 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
HA! this is the first time i've ever read a secret like this and just KNOWN who the OP was talking about

should i be saying YAY here, well I will anyway

(Anonymous) 2010-12-31 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
I agree selling fanart is skeevy, but as far as tracing...Are you sure she's not just referencing them? I mean, I know I've drawn stuff freehand before and people accused me of tracing, but that just tells me I'm pretty frickin awesome at drawing. Maybe she's just that good? I mean, she's a studio artist IRL, right?

Unless she admitted to tracing before, which I have no idea.

[identity profile] lejic.livejournal.com 2010-12-31 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
The thing is, generally, the best artist ever won't make lines exactly like the photo. Because photos and drawings are different - especially in RL. If you copy exactly, it won't look as good as if you drew by hand because a certain softness, etc is needed. I can't put it into words but surely as an artist you know this. Think about a 20 year old person's face; if you trace the lines, it looks like they're 40. So the artist alters the "real" thing.
tl;dr;
Those who accused you are losers so I'm not saying anything about you, but tracing CAN be proved.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-31 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you. It's possible to make a pretty fuckin' accurate reproduction of a photo without tracing it. I've done it myself. Although I assume the OP is complaining mostly about the Granada images because the SherlockBBC ones are fairly obviously not traced. At least not from any promo image I've ever seen.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-31 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"fairly obviously not traced"
lol are you kidding?
one is a screenshot from the series, the other is based on a picture of BC's face pasted on a model's body.
let's not even talk about the totally original poster.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-01 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
so - no one will read this I think ever - I went back through her lj

here: http://pennies-4-eyes.livejournal.com/21334.html?thread=675670#t675670
"My sister asked why you had traced the photos with a black outline... sort of says it all really..."

here: http://pennies-4-eyes.livejournal.com/20583.html?thread=621671#t621671
"AMAZING likeness. Really, that's... quite astonishingly photographic."

here: http://pennies-4-eyes.livejournal.com/20583.html?thread=624487#t624487
"anyhow, he looks amazing. Photographic really. Are you sure you did not just upload a never-before-seen picture of him? Lol."
she replies - "LOL! I'm afraid there's no "never before released" photos. I WISH there was! Some faces just speak to me better...are easier to capture realistically. ANd most of the time it's the angular faces that are easier. But Brett Holmes, angular fellow that he is, has given me fits and good ole Watson was natural as pie to paint."

fair enough, you might say. er no. here are the photos she used.

for Jeremy Brett's face, this one, flipped over: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ryS3i4XGsxo/TOl9nOAEm_I/AAAAAAAAC8k/xOycIFGahdA/s1600/brett.jpg

for David Burke, this one, flipped over: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2756/4376723796_4fbe7b96be_o.jpg

for BC: the most likely one is this -
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_8GnMdafpO48/TMvErwM5CqI/AAAAAAAAGzE/cOUik_2NZbc/s1600/benedict-cumberbatch-006.jpg

which is much more different from the bookmark than the others are, also looks much less like an exact copy of BC, i think, and is for that reason a much nicer piece of ART. perhap for this one she did proper art and later ran out of time or patience and took shortcuts.

for martin freeman: came up blank here, didn't find an exactly the same photo. Say this quite happily.

in b4 'but she's got kids and is just trying to make a living'
in b4 'but you can't prove this', know what? it's your right to say that, it's my right to obsessively google
in b4 'maybe she IS that good', because you're right, maybe she is.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-02 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the googling, anon ♥

Damn, I hadn't even seen the various comments hinting that she should come clean but now I'm even more pissed off. (And as usual these comments come from other artists, because apparently they're the only ones who aren't blind.)

As I said in the secret, it's one thing to trace, it's another to trace and blatantly lie about it. The worse thing is it takes some time to do something like that and if she honestly said that tracing photomanips was part of the process, it wouldn't bother anyone.
But she has to pretend she painted it and explain how she loves 'drawing' beautiful hands and that she doesn't know what the commenters are talking about because otherwise she won't feel like a REAL artist.

*screams*

(Anonymous) 2011-01-02 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, my thoughts too - I DON'T MIND if she uses photos! They CAN and DO in fact LOOK NICE, as is proved by the large numbers of people who comment on the bookmark posts saying 'that is a nice picture!'

what is not nice is the pretence, the claim that 'certain faces just speak to me', etc etc. (also the charging of money. GIFT ECONOMY, a beautiful phrase. Regular freaking SALES, I'm sorry, NO. she's a grown woman who should understand what fandom is about: it is not about this.)

(hi OP! can you tell i am enjoying unleashing these *feelings*!)

it's pretty telling that on this post - http://pennies-4-eyes.livejournal.com/19083.html#cutid1 - where she shows her PROCESS, the sketched john&sherlock are at very different angles/postures/expressions to the inked ones, and the final thing is INCREDIBLY stiff, after the sketch has been replaced with traces that don't look like they fit together at all.

do you have any thoughts about the 'library' print? Mine are along the lines of 'lol that does not look like any kind of holmes and watson I have ever imagined, also since when is there a library in Baker Street'.

long comment is long

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2010-12-31 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh. Those are awful! How can you even think you can not be called out on that, let alone that you deserve six bucks a hit for slapping a filter onto a photo and cropping it?

(Anonymous) 2010-12-30 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
The fuck

Call them out on that shit.
That is fucking terrible. They're tracing promo art and SELLING them? If they were just giving them away, it wouldn't be such a big deal, but they're making a profit by tracing and selling official promo pictures!

Shit is ridiculous.
Cannot even tell you how mad this makes me.

[identity profile] nazihra.livejournal.com 2010-12-30 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
In other news, the design of this secret is really cute for some reason.

That's what I was thinking - it's really well designed. lol.

[identity profile] adlanth.livejournal.com 2010-12-31 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it's really lovely.

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2010-12-31 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm. You're right. Nice, clean, easy to read, and clever. Not to mention organized in a way that appeals to graph-loving OCD folks like myself.

[identity profile] amusesme.livejournal.com 2010-12-31 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really like the idea of selling fan art at all.

Especially if it is traced.

Especially if it is so OBVIOUSLY traced.

Especially if it is so OBVIOUSLY traced and then LIED about.

So I feel you, OP.
