I don't think an anime as silly as Hetalia is enough to base your future career on.

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-01-02 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeaaaah this.

[identity profile] elica.livejournal.com 2011-01-02 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I based my University choice on Indiana Jones, and got pretty happy with it, even though I let down archeology to other periods of study.
If anon is happy with history, let them be ! Whatever the way it began.

[identity profile] standardtastic.livejournal.com 2011-01-02 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Just saying, it's not a good idea to go into a certain area just because you like the way it's portrayed in the media. The OP should at least do a bit of research about what it's like to be a teacher, what the job opportunities are going to be once they finish school, if they enjoy reading about history, etc.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-03 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
Anything can put a thirst for knowledge in someone. I mean, of course they're going to have to put thought behind how they are going to become a history teacher, but I wouldn't discredit Hetalia as a feasible reason for someone to get interested in a subject just because it's silly. Maybe they saw that learning history could be fun and want children to know how fun it can be, too?

Not saying that Hetalia is what you should hold historical accuracy to, but history was portrayed in a fun way through it.

[identity profile] standardtastic.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Enjoying history is not a good enough reason to become a teacher. There are dozens of other factors that OP should consider before considering a career in the teaching profession.

lol photobucket

seriously though doing it wrong

[identity profile] fukkafyla.livejournal.com 2011-01-02 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
At kindergarten level, right?

[identity profile] juandalyn.livejournal.com 2011-01-02 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
But please realise that there is maybe 1% where Hetalia and real history overlap.
You should be interested in history even without Hetalia.

[identity profile] heretherebefic.livejournal.com 2011-01-02 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, this thread is cheery.

I say go for it. :) That's an awesome thing to get out of Hetalia!

(Anonymous) 2011-01-02 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, guys? Where Hetalia leaves off, the fandom picks up. There's plenty of stuff there to get someone interested in history.

[identity profile] caterfree10.livejournal.com 2011-01-02 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who imagined the various events we studied in my college history class being done by the Hetalia characters to get by the boring as fuck lectures (man could NOT teach worth a damn), I think this is awesome. :3 Fuck the haters in this thread. Whatever inspires you to love something awesome IS awesome. ^_^

(Anonymous) 2011-01-03 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh. Right. I hated most of my history classes (and math classes) in high school because the teachers were usually athletic department faculty that needed to be teaching an academic class in order to be on the payroll. All they did was teach out of a book, barely made it interesting at ALL.

[identity profile] caterfree10.livejournal.com 2011-01-04 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
FOR SERIOUS. Social studies may not be on most standardized tests (yet), but damn if they don't make it as boring as possible half the time just to spite those who might actually gain an interest in History. :|

Though I find it odd that I'm the opposite of a lot of people in this thread re: history education. Most of my middle school and high school teachers were awesome. I just got unlucky in who I got for my history prof in college, I suppose. :/

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2011-01-02 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Was Hetalia a catalyst to developing an interest in actual history for you? Do you enjoy reading history books/watching documentaries/etc without always thinking in Hetalia context? If yes, this is great and I hope it goes well.

Do you read up on history and spend the whole time giggling about your OTP? Do you refuse to look into things that involve countries that aren't in Hetalia and that you don't have an OC for? If yes, please stop what you're doing, sit down, and think good and hard about making a major life decision based solely on fandom squee.

+1

A+ comment

[identity profile] holidaylights.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Well put.

[identity profile] reaperangelique.livejournal.com 2011-01-02 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Guys, OP isn't saying they're going to become a history teacher armed with what they learnt from the series. Hetalia probably just sparked off an interest for them and they've gone on to study it more, or plan to. No need to get on your high horses. For what it's worth, I say go for it, history's a fascinating subject.

[identity profile] mature.livejournal.com 2011-01-02 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I can understand this for a number of reasons, at least from how I am about things. If I'm dealing with something (books, games, comics, whatever) that plays with history, I'm usually interested in later going and looking up the "real" history behind it. I mean hell, I never knew about the whole France wanting to merge with England thing (http://networkeurope.radio.cz/feature/french-premiere-proposed-merger-with-england-in-1956) until that friggin' episode.

I figure anything that makes you want to learn is a GOOD THING. But maybe it's just me.

Good luck. I don't know what country you live in, but in the USA it's hard to get a job teaching social studies. And if you do manage to get in (unlikely if you don't coach sports since for some reason most school boards in America seem to think there's some kind of correlation there, who knows why) get ready for one of the most politicized teaching jobs there is. Seriously, read Lies My Teacher Told Me sometime and you will see what I mean. You're basically expected to teach propaganda

[identity profile] unavalible.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
As a Classics major, I seriously hope that you've got more of a passion for history than what Hetalia instilled into you. You have to live, eat, and breath history. You have really got to have a passion to make it, because it's a competitive field and filled with a lot of obsessed people (myself included). While I don't like Hetalia, I don't want to tell you to screw off. I'm just hoping that you find more of a passion in actual history than Hetalia as the years go by, or you're going to find it all very difficult.

Woah... that was inspiring :/

[identity profile] sliefoxx.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Anon, the people here have legit concerns.

I love Hetalia. Hetalia reminded me how much I love history (High school made me hate it).

That said. I'm a very boring person who reads history books and watches documentaries for fun. You also have to have a grasp on literature and philosophies, all changing in certain time periods to be able to have a true understanding of history. There is a lot of self-research that not everyone is up to.

You didn't say you wanted to teach history based off of Hetalia, so I only hope Hetalia (re)sparked an interest the way it did me. If you're 100% serious anon, I say good luck.

Just be the kind of teacher that brings history alive. We don't have enough of those.

[identity profile] torakaka.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I sincerely hope that you have a serious passion for History, and just don't want to do it because OMG SQUEE!!

And that you are a boring person like me that doesn't change the channel off of Discovery/History/NatGeo lol.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-03 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I had a strong love of history before Hetalia, and I wanted to major in History and Teach it.
High School classes were a breeze for me since all you had to do was memorize facts. But once I got into college history classes, things got tough. It was less of memorizing facts and more of analyzing and describing events and their significance to the modern world. Most of my classes involved writing elaborate essays and essay tests, which isn't my stronghold, especially with the topic manner.

I wasted a good two years in college trying to get myself into the new style of history classes and I failed miserably. I could say that High School didn't do a good job of preparing me, but then again, I realized that this major just wasn't for me.

That's not to say you shouldn't try, Anon. But really really look into it, it could save you a lot of money in college courses... trust me.
