My dad wouldn't be able to watch the show. He sees "shut up" as worse than swearing, so now I cringe as a reflex, too.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-01-02 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
The character in my icon says "shut up" so many times throughout his game that montages on YT have been made. I actually thought it was kinda funny, and thought about making a drinking game to it, but realized I'd end up with liver failure within an hour or two.

That said, sometimes people just need to be told to shut up. But if the two in your secret are seriously out of line when they say it (I don't watch DW, so I can't say), then I'd be surprised if people didn't snap back.

Do they really do it that often? I've never noticed them saying it.

[identity profile] spittingfish.livejournal.com 2011-01-02 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
maybe like three times. two that i remember. but i didn't take notes.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-01-02 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
If you listen for it, they do, yeah. Eleven does it a lot, though sometimes it's not directly "shut up" and is some variant of "shh", "be quiet" or "stop talking" (eg -- VOV, "stop talking, brain thinking, hush" and he puts his hands over Amy and Rory's mouths). It's supposed to be funny, but I can see how it might make people cringe, especially a show with a wide, young audience. When I was a little kid "shut up" was something you never ever said or you'd get in trouble, so having a character like the Doctor (and his companion) do it so often might displease people.

This.

I think this is the reason a lot of people would be upset. It kinda upsets me too cuz, for all that 10 said he was rude, 11 can be pretty rude too.

[identity profile] spittingfish.livejournal.com 2011-01-02 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
i say be quiet or shut up when i'm trying to think, lol. so i didn't find it offensive at all. /personal opinion.

I've never noticed.

But growing up in my family 'shut up' was closer to polite than rude.

You know, I love that show to bits but that bugs me too. Not because I think it's such a terrible thing to say, just really unimaginative.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-02 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
If someone ever tells me to "shut up", and there isn't some horrible crisis happening that requires total silence, I will spit in that person's eye.

I HATE "shut up". And yeah, it also irks me when I hear others saying it. The only time I don't get pissed is if it's a not-serious response to teasing ("Are you wearing your grandmother's sweater again?" "Shut up!").

(Anonymous) 2011-01-03 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well don't you sound like a lovely person to be around.

[identity profile] redscarfe.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I think in Doctor Who there often ARE situations that require total silence or a large number of people and/or planets will get destroyed. I think that counts as a horrible crisis?

And I agree about the non-serious teasing. xD

[identity profile] kinosino.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
My parents never told me that any words that could be used in a disrespectful manner were OMG SWEAR WORDS, so I don't have this problem. (Did have an awkward moment in kindergarten playing finger puppets having missed the literal day in class when they covered not using one's middle finger, though. I joined halfway through the school year, okay!?) Never really noticed anyone other than the Doctor saying it, though I suppose it is kinda lazy writing that they feel the need to reiterate his human-mores-lacking alienness with it. Maybe if they're hoping if they do it enough it'll come off as a verbal tic or something.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-01-03 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
It's not OMG swear words. I can't even judge how rude that is, being an ESL, and in general I have a high tolerance for swearing, I even love it in some contexts.

It's...that he's very talkative himself, and it seems to me that as he (Eleven specifically, not the previous Doctors, plus Amy) keeps telling people not to speak, it means that what other people have to say doesn't matter...and (which is where I really start overinterpreting) that they don't matter. Which seems to run contrary to all that the Doctor is.
Again: I'm overreacting. But to me, denying someone the right to speak is a pretty terrible thing to do. I know in most cases in DW it's done without thinking, or as a joke, but I think it's happenning very frequently in S5 (not just with the Doctor, but with Amy too -like, twice in the opening to the Christmas special alone, or to her dad at her wedding, or -am I sounding obsessive now?) and it's starting to grate.

Eh, more in response to the other responses, if that makes sense.

I think he tends to need silence to think because he's just that easily distracted and finds it hard to focus otherwise. Plus I think there's something to the fact that he does tend to ramble himself - if he hasn't told himself to shut up and I've just forgotten, I'm sure he will sooner or later.

Ah well, writers.

I agree. The hypocrisy irks me too, although I really, really want to see more of the next season to see if Eleven grows out of that habit the way Ten gradually changed some of his habits when he was around.

[identity profile] tsukisei.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree. It really bothered me especially in the Christmas special. Couldn't they have had him say something else, like 'be quiet' or 'shh?' 'Shut up' just seems so harsh.

[identity profile] justspaz.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Shut up isn't polite at all, but the Doctor isn't human, and isn't really polite in the way we think of normal societal interactions. Especially 11. So him always saying shut up to me makes sense, because he's an alien, and he's a pretty smug one too.

[identity profile] wldcatsprstr-14.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
You could say that.

But a lot of people were really mad at the end of S4 when Ten was saying how Wilfred didn't matter and that the Doctor was so much more important. You could say that since the Doctor isn't human, he thinks of things differently than humans do and he has a right to say people who aren't Time Lords and aren't as smart or as powerful as he is don't matter. Which he doesn't because it's not true. The Doctor is special because he doesn't have the flat out elitist nature of the other Time Lords (and that's why Ten's words were so shocking to hear) and the Doctor is always saying how the smallest person is important.

Just because he's an alien doesn't mean he doesn't know what it means to be polite. Ten even acknowledges of rude he's being half the time. If he didn't have a conception of what it meant to be rude, he wouldn't know he was doing it. In fact, he's a lot more human than he first appears, for all the claims about how obtuse and alien he can be.

And he's always telling people to use their brains and think and try to figure things out. So if someone is trying to help, it's pretty un-Doctor-like to tell them to flat out "shut up," even if it's distracting him. Nine was pretty rude and had a tendency to ask for quiet when he was thinking, but even he would say "can I have a bit of hush please?," or something like that.

Tack on the fact that kids watch this show and it never does to show kids that being rude is OK, it's easy to see why it's both annoying and disconcerting to have the Doctor say "shut up" so much.

[identity profile] turntodarkness.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
I... Inly ever noticed him telling people to shut up when something big is going down and they're being MAJORLY distracting. Yes, they may have something important to say--but chances are, what's going down is about a thousand times MORE important.

[identity profile] ainekatt.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god me too.

I love Eleven dearly, but I hate when he tells people to shut up. Something about it just... irksome. I don't even really know what bothers me about it.

[identity profile] crimsontriforce.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Eleven fails at social interaction? How am I not surprised? :p I noticed that too and I didn't like it, but the Doctor's far from perfect. It's an actual flaw of his imho. But it fits the character.
