Nothing wrong with mainstream. Sometimes stuff is 'underground' for a very good reason: because it SUCKS.

Metal taught me that. At least it taught me something.

or maybe some stuff is unknown because the band is popular locally and not everybody lives in that general area. I can name at least two bands that are popular where I live but people who live far away from that area will have no fucking clue who they are.

UGH UGH THANK YOU FOR THIS COMMENT. I have one friend in particular who is always combing through indie download websites for underground bands. Some of them are great, but some of them are just plain, the mediocrity drives me insane. Just because they sing in Chechen or something doesn't make them amazing.
