When Arcade Fire gets nominated for a Best Album Grammy and Vampire Weekend hits the top ten in the Billboard charts, I'd say that the line between ~indie and ~mainstream is irrevocably blurred, anyway.

If a band is on an independent label (or released the overwhelming majority of their catalog on an independent label), it's "indie". Pavement will always be "indie rock" regardless of the fact that they had a video on MTV in the 90s.

"Indie" is not a synonym for "obscure", it's just a term used to classify music. (Likewise, there's tons of obscure music out there that was released on major labels.)

Yes, I do know that. Hence my use of the tilde to underline my usage of "indie" as a genre, not whether or not the individual artists referenced release their music on an independent or major label.

I'm just saying, I don't think the line is that blurred since it only matters whether or not a band is on an independent label as to whether or not they are "indie", not how many records they sell or what awards they win.
