I don't know, I think the whole concept of "femininity" is bullshit (sort of like the whole concept of "masculinity"). Masculinity at least tends to espouse more universal human characteristics (loyalty, honesty, courage, etc) as opposed to femininity which tends to be more artificial surface stuff (shoes, shopping, chocolate, cattiness). It usually ends up coming across as a caricature to me, almost hollow.

I hate the terms "femininity", "girly girl", etc. Its such artificial bullshit all the way through. I wish people's behavior wasn't boxed like that, and I don't think people should be writing characters just to fit that mold of so-called "girliness".

I couldn't agree more with you. I remember reading something along the lines of "When girls behave like complete humans beings, they get accused of trying to act like men".

I just want more complex characters (and male character aren't really more complex, they just use different archetypes).

For me, If I'm watching an action movie, then I do expect to see women who ere action oriented, and not just a token "female".

So feminine characters can't have "loyalty, honesty, and courage"? Why are those traits masculine? I never thought of femininity as being just consumerism, that's only how it's often portrayed in the media. I do think the categories are bullshit, but they're useful for discussions like these.

How is uber-masculinity, with the concept of violence, showing no emotions, and physical strength as most important any better than stereotypical femininity? BOTH types of gender stereotypes are artificial and ridiculous. Real people are much more complex than that. I think the OP just wants more variety, and female characters who don't have to be a tomboy stereotype to be strong.

It's just sad that men=neutral, women=other.

I don't think the poster is saying that "loyalty, honesty, etc" are inherently masculine, just that they are presented like that.

I don't like uber-masculine characters either, like you, I just want more complex characters.

I don't know why traits like loyalty, responsibility, courage, etc. are masculine. Similarly, I don't know why shoes and yogurt are feminine. (I have my theories, but...) In my opinion, if you identify as a female, then you are just as feminine as anyone else, and if you identify as a girl then you are just as girly as anyone else.

I see you understand that the categories are bullshit, but on the contrary to you...I don't see them as "useful" for discussions like these. And I actually think they hurt discussions like these by putting female behavior into boxes like 'masculine' and "feminine". Thats just my opinion though.
