When a male-dominated fandom likes some media, the artist is the greatest man who ever lived and any dissent gets jumped on. But when things start going south, its straight nonstop bitchery. One of my least favorite things about male-dominated fandom. I've never met a male-dominated fandom who just can enjoy a show like normal people. Its so weird.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-03 01:58 am (UTC)(link)This has been both my and my brother's experience (both dudes). I gave up on "male-dominated/boys club" fandom's entirely, he still puts up with it but is always complaining about the whining they do over every pointless thing. Constant wank.

I didn't realize how true this was until I read your comment and then I was trying to figure out what the core difference was. I think it's probably that female-dominated fandom is meta based while male-dominated fandom is debate based. This probably also accounts for the value placed on fanon vs. the value placed on canon in either case. This isn't absolute, obviously, but I AM A WOMEN IN FANDOM SO I LIKE DOING META I GUESS.
