Yeah, I thought that too but at the same time how did he get any nutritional value out of it? And how did he age? If that's not his physical body in the Grid, he could just stay the same, but if that is his physical body then he would die in about three days due to lack of water and food. So I really don't understand that concept at all.

As for the other programs, I didn't see any eating at the club but there were drinks.

I don't think he did get nutritional value out of food, more like ...emotional, maybe? As for aging, I read a fic where Flynn aged as kind of a "fuck you" to Clu, that he chose to do it to separate them even further, rather than it being natural (since he really wouldn't, and with the way time worked inside he'd actually be like, 800 or something). It's the only way I can make sense of it so I've incorporated it into my headcanon, haha.

I figure the drinks atleast were all energy variations. Although if water = energy, why did Gem use an umbrella? Gah, plotholes, I want to fill you in but sometimes you really stretch my limits!

So is that not his physical body in the system or it is? That's one of the many things that were hanging me up in the movie. Because it appeared that Sam's physical body was transferred into the Grid (or it was just a scan but even if it was a scan, where did his physical body go?) because he bled when struck by the disc. And that fic is helpful because I forgot that cycles are faster than in Earth time, so I wonder if he could even exit the Grid and still live in the real world? Hm.

Haha and yes there were quite a few plot holes. I did enjoy Gems name though. I think I was the only one to laugh at that part because all I could think of was that she was 'truly truly truly outrageous'. =)

I've always thought it wasn't their physical bodies, but that the User carry over a lot of their human... idk, "hangups" I guess, because they can directly effect code. So Sam wasn't really "bleeding" but because he's human and "wounded" his brain interprets a cut as painful and he should "bleed." Flynn's mind interprets food as good for him, so he creates and eats "food," and since a lot of time goes by with him trapped in there, he should "age." Flynn, since he knows about the Grid and it's his baby, has a lot more finesse over things, which is why I think he chose to age and why I feel like him eating is more an "I'm human" comfort ritual than necessity, whereas with Sam it's more instinctive.

I've always figured with the physical body transfer into the Grid that it wasn't scanning them (and making a copy) so much as actually converting them into digital information. So their physical bodies disappear, but they aren't literally physical in the Grid (because it's not a physical place but a separate plane in cyberspace), they've been digitized. I could be wrong of course, but that was how I understood it.

[identity profile] twilightedge.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Well even if they were digitized, I'm not sure the Matrix theory (I just made that term up haha but what I mean is that the mind believes it to be real, thus it is real, doesn't apply here because they are not plugged into the system, they are around the system in a way, or outside of it) so I can't really see that belief of 'this food isn't real but my mind makes it real' can be applied to the Grid.

Even if the food didn't do anything and Flynn altered his digital self, and he never physically aged (which I get to show passage of time and to act as a visual metaphor for his wisdom and difference between Clu) then why would they show us that? I know Quorra wants to imitate humans (so Flynn probably did it for her benefit too) but I can't get past that food not helping their bodies at all.

Of course, this is why I wish they spent more time world building instead of re-hashing (or rather, updating) what was shown from the first movie. so I could see how the programs lived in their updated society. I'm sure I'm the minority wanting that view since it's just a fun sci-fi (more fantasy than sci-fi) flick and I shouldn't think beyond the pretty colours and awesome effects hehe.
